In the hope of this achieving sticky status [], I post two links with VERY enlightening reads and howto's of how to make a your NAS a Drobo-like disk array using ZFS:
Glen Hewlett on using FreeNAS as system OS:
ZFS & FreeNAS - A poor (and very geeky) man’s Drobo setup!
Matt Rude's well-written recipe wiki, also using FreeNAS:
Freenas/ZFS and FreeNAS expansion
I hope this will help those of you seeking info on this particular topic. For me at least it made me really reconsider the amount of work needed!
If FreeNAS offered a way of doing this automagically, it would REALLY be a boon.
BTW, As this is far from a trivial way of setting up a disk array, maybe this thread could act as a placeholder for other/related links regarding the (re)use of various/different sized disks
Cheers,
