How to remotely access IoT device over VPN?

One of my IoT devices has local access only (its App only connects to the device if they are in the same local network). I was hoping to access it (to read some sensor values) remotely by running a VPN server on my router, but OpenVPN seems to provide a different subnet and the App will still not discover the device.

How can I remotely access this device using functionality of Asuswrt-Merlin? (If at all)

The device has a fixed IP address, but I believe the App performs a Bonjour/MDNS discovery to find the device.

It is possible to use TAP in Android, but you need rooted device. There is also an app available in Google Play claiming to be able to run TAP without root: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=it.colucciweb.openvpn&hl=en
Did some googling - many people say that app is working.
