New Around Here
hello all,

I have an old Linksys 54g Gateway and just got FIOS installed at home. All works OK but the audio/video streaming is poor. Besides that I am intesrested in NAS for backup and maybe printing. I need up to 4 wired and wirless connections. Range is not huge as I have a 1000 sq. ft. home with upstairs.

what are best choices for a FIOS system with 1-2 desktops and laptops running at once? I want very smooth video while downloading large files and browsing.

I have always used linksys but I will use whatever it takes. I am use to linksys user interface and setup but . . . .

thanks,

billy

Netgear WNDR3700 or the WNDR37AV. Both are the same. Right now its the best consumer class wireless router.

Enjoy your FIOS. Jealous, we're stuck with lousy AT&T UVerse here in FL (if you can get it!). At least Comcast has good cable modem speeds.

Me too, because D-Link has more bad designs/firmware than not in various products, and Netgear is a close second. Linksys, imperfect at times, has a much better track record.

thanks for input . . .

Yea that's how i feel also, linksys is not perfect but it's consistently above average with a few issues.

What about bandwidth? aren't bandwidth and through-put very similar? but isn't there different types of types through-put measurements?

what about the E3000 - that's the best choice going at the moment?

what would you pick based on my requirements in original post?

BTW: is my terminology correct is using FIOS, (i.e., i have fiber coming into a outside box that thens feeds me interenet, phone, TV, etc.). I picked the highest rate which is only 3Mb/s download. I think maybe FIOS is an incorrect term to describe my fiber interface????

thnaks,

billy

3Mb/s down over fiber? Something isn't right with that. Thats more like DSL speed. Who is your provider?

Atheros 680Mhz, 64Mb 32kb-i /32kb -d with 832kb packet buffer on the PCI Gig Controller combo is a very strong contender. Both Netgear WNDR3700/AV and the Trendnet TEW-673GRU all 3 models use the same chips. Netgear has 8 wire leads to make up 8 ANT while Trendnet only has 2 ANT external SMA. Coverage is about equal internal vs external ANT not the issue here.

Stable (no overheating)
Fast wired routing speeds
No disconnection in WAN or LAN
Stable Wireless connections
Able to view all web sites without getting error messages.

The only issues with the Atheros is that it limits the code so the firmware engineers can't undo some of the limited features. So there are glitches with these routers. Minor ones though. DD-WRT can work on the Netgear but if you follow that site you see how many issues they're having. You can't tweak the hardware as they thought thanks to Atheros.

Yes I have to agree these 3 routers are the most advanced consumer grade routers we have right now. DIR-665 with 1GHz tops these 3 with N450 feature followed by the Trendent TEW-691GR with 500MHz for N450. These two alone cost much more then the 3 N300 Dual Band I had mentioned above.

DSL on fiber . . . . is that a valid combination of terms?

i will check into my new internet interface. I know its fiber aws I saw it being laid. But, it does conver to copper before coming inside! It uses CT%e cable to interface to my old 54G gateway.

someone please explain to me the versions of fiber being used for internet interface.

thnaks,
billy

auctual test results - how do i stack up?

this is while using my linksys 54G. technically it is a 10Mb/s down and a 4 Mb/s up i think. I use a small provider called Bulloch Net.

with this info in mind, would an E3000 or the Net Gear router be worth the investment? I want to be able to view videos including movies smoothly while downloading large files.

You should read this page on Bulloch Net's website about their DSL speed and conversion to FTTH.

http://www.bulloch.net/dslservices.html

Looks like you may have already been converted which is good.

I would go for a good router with good wifi such as the WNDR3700/WNDR37AV. Stock firmware should work fine for your application, no need to mess with DDWRT.

Or if you like Linksys, I suppose the E3000 is OK.

just so i know the exact terms, what kind of service am i receiving?

in terms of topology, media, protocol, etc. what is the proper desription of what service I am getting?

is DSL considered broadband? in common terms DSL implies it's always on. DSl can be on copper, fiber, RF (all of which are media tyupes) correct?

protocol is the comminciation subswet such as TCP/IP, right? the WWW uses TCP/IP correct?

topology is like LAN or Intranet, right?

where does FIOS fit in? a fiber media type or what?

thanks,
billy

My video streaming seems much much smoother with wired connections vs. wireless. I recently replaced my wireless repeaters with MoCA which retransmits the signal over the coax used by the cable TV. My xBox, Tivo and other device that feed my HDTV use this connection and my video streaming is now completely smooth
