Intermittent connection problems with my RT-AX86S

I've been having issues for a couple of days now out of the blue with my connection. I'm pretty sure it's affecting multiple devices (wired and wireless) so I don't think it's my PC's ethernet cable or anything. But every now and then things slow down entirely (web pages won't load, voice goes robotic on Discord, a game will disconnect) for a few seconds or a minute or so then figure itself out.

I have a gigabit connection. Using a Virgin Media modem which is plugged into my AX86S. I've tried rebooting both but not done any other troubleshooting, I'm not even sure where to start. I don't think it's my ISP because there's no widespread outage or complaint.

The only thing I've noticed when tinkering in the router settings is a spike in traffic at the same time, but no idea if relevant. What should I be checking? What steps should I attempt next?

What firmware is your router running and do you have AiCloud enabled? High upload traffic registered was one of the symptoms of recent malware infecting Asus routers. Reset your router to factory defaults, update the firmware to latest available, configure after manually. If your router was infected - the latest firmware for this model will fix it. Don't use AiCloud, find safer alternatives.
