Internet Dropping PPPoE - Need to reboot router to get back online

WAN issues should not prevent you from connecting to WIFI, even if there is no internet access, it would not report back a bad wifi password.

Now I suspect their internet isn't actually going down, just wifi.
PPPoE is going down. Even from a wired connection I lose internet access. Once I connect to the router, I confirm WAN is down.

If both wifi and WAN are going down, I'd try the WPS factory reset. Set your WAN MTU to 1492 and reboot.

If that doesn't resolve it, at least for the WAN portion I'd call your ISP. No idea why you can't connect to wifi when it goes down, maybe you're connecting to the node and when the main router's WAN is down it disconnects the node, not sure.

Maybe take the node out of the picture completely for now, factory reset the main router and use just that for a day or two to see if the problem still exists.

When you say your using PPPoE does it mean you have a xDSL modem that your router is connected to? Something like a ISP provided modem/router that has been put in modem only mode? What is your router connected to on the WAN port?

I have fiber to my house. Removed ISP equipment used a transceiver and connected copper to WAN port. It’s worked forever.

Until now.....

Ignore the advice to call your ISP, they aren't going to help you with that setup. You'll need to put their equipment back in the path to get their support.

Tried doing a factory reset with WPS. After 4 hours I have the same issue. Called the ISP and they are telling me there is only 1 session.

Is your ISP provided equipment working properly?

I have a transceiver in the middle of my provider and Asus router with GPON inserted. Rebooting it does nothing. Only Asus router reboot resolves bring the connection up instantly. This set up have been solid for years, mid you I have upgraded routers a few times.

Downgrade back to the last firmware that worked and factory reset again. You're using a non-standard setup by using the transceiver to connect to the ONT without the ISP device in the path. It is not a supported configuration so who knows what will/won't work.

Hello,

This is a very common setting with Bell Fibre in Canada. Lots of people doing it this way for years. I tried playing with MAC cloning to see the results.

Just because it is a common setting by a bunch of people who have showed each other how to do it on the internet, does not mean it is a supported or standard setup. Does Bell tell you to do it? Do they support that setup?

Are you cloning the MAC of the WAN of the device they provide? That's really the only clone that might potentially do something. However since you are able to connect initially it seems unlikely that would be related.

But again if it was working fine before and now it isn't undo whatever you did - in this case a firmware upgrade.

Yeah I understand. I feel as though I was only 388.1 for a while since the issue only began a few months ago(prior to my first issue with 5ghz) but at that point internet wasn’t dropping only 5ghz was having issues. But then I did factory resets and issue seems different now.

I’m actually wondering right now if it might be some kind of hardware issue. Problem is I want to wait till wifi 7 routers are out to upgrade so who knows how long that will be. Do we know when Asus is releasing theirs?

What clients do you have waiting for Wi-Fi 7 routers?
You have issues with your current Asus routers and you want more Asus routers?

A few reasons.

Asus outside of this issue has been great. I have a few nodes which I’d have to get more after. I like having a cluster.

Future proof.

Wifi 7 has nice port options, multiple 10G, sometimes SFP sometimes 2.5G. Look at the new TP-Link BE900.

Can you elaborate? I’m thinking price wise too right. I don’t want to build a solution with small business class equipment.

I don’t want to build a solution with small business class equipment.

Then you pay $700 a router with 10GbE ports, but inadequate hardware inside; perpetual beta firmware, but RGB lights; no clients for it, but "future proof". You're the perfect target for vendors marketing and false advertisement. Get 4x units for better coverage. The choice is yours.

If you disable HW acceleration, limiting your WAN-LAN throughput to about 350Mbps on AX88U.
Just enable a few options in the settings and the huge bandwidth from marketing and ads disappears

I have a term for this:

Honda Civic R with loud exhaust and stickers type of networking.
