Is it worth buying an ASUS router over my stock ISP Wifi 7 router?

New Around Here
Hi, I'm from UK with EE FTTP Broadband (1Gb download, 110Mbs upload, PPPoE) and the router from them we're using is the EE Smart Hub Pro, now the confusing thing is on paper the specs of this router are surprisingly good, the SoC if I'm not mistaken is currently better than any ASUS model in terms of raw power/IPC (Correct me if I'm wrong)
  • 2.4 GHz: 4×4 MIMO
  • 5 GHz: 4×4 MIMO
  • 6 GHz: 4×4 MIMO
  • LAN ports: 4 × 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet
  • WAN port: 1 × 2.5 Gigabit WAN
  • SoC: Qualcomm IPQ9570 (Networking Pro series - 4x ARM Cortex-A73)
  • CPU: Quad-core 2.2 GHz ARM
My network set up is as follows: Fibre ONT > Cat6 > EE Smart Hub Pro > Cat6 > PC

What I'm noticing is sometimes in Halo MCC on Steam, players will occasionally teleport, jump around, rubberband in custom games and I'm not sure why.
Here are some speeds tests because I'm not sure what I'm looking for or how to test this.

Your bottleneck is your internet connection, so no expensive router can change that.
Lag in games can come from the internet, for instance if you're playing with someone from the other side of the world, nothing you can do about that either.

Gigabit FTTP with 4ms baseline latency and under 10ms variation under stress is a "bottleneck" in games??? This is perfect quality line and very few ASUS routers have the specs to match the ISP gateway.

I meant the 1 GBit/s is less than 2.5 GBit/s ports. I perfectly agree with your conclusion. He's lucky to have that ISP.
... and I'm not here to anything.

Yeah I'm only on the 1Gb package so the ONT only has a 1Gb LAN port, they upgrade it to an ONT with a 2.5Gb LAN if you take higher speeds, either a Zyxel or Nokia. But my PC motherboard is capped to Z170 1Gb LAN anyway, needs upgrading at this point (6700K), waiting for RAM prices to go down. 😅

Not worth it, in my opinion. Your stock ISP router is a beast (4×4 MIMO on all bands!). Honestly, I didn’t even realize SOHO routers like that are around.

Yeah, the hardware specs are peak, but I thought maybe the ASUS was better in terms of firmware or something, maybe it handled latency better, or the stock ISP router firmware was causing spikes somehow, since they don’t release patch notes and push updates at random times. Though, from looking at this forum, the WiFi 7 routers from ASUS aren’t too stable in terms of firmware either.

Not sure about the latency spikes, but pretty sure your ISP gateway is more secure than most 3rd party devices offering 100+ firmware options, more than needed. All ISP provided devices are locked down tight. No need to spend extra money to test your luck.

Would use and configure a good router all the time, than the stock one.

Own equipment becomes own responsibility. When ISP equipment doesn't work properly they replace it for you.

I will buy your router if you are not happy with it.
