just wondering if there is a way to apply Merlin firmware updates via command line as opposed to doing it from the GUI? Thanks in advance.

Do you have an issue doing it from the GUI or just for fun?

Copy the firmware trx file to the router's home/root (use scp or WinScp or whatever you like).
Login via ssh.
Verify the trx file is present.
Run: mtd-write2 trxfilename linux
