Manual AiMesh

I'm just wondering if anyone has tried setting up a mesh network manually (Not sure if that is possible. I guess the best that could be done is an AP?) and what was the results from the hardware used?
How may routers were used?
Firmware version?
What hardware was used?
How good was the coverage?
How did you configure it?
Settings/Config?

Just curious..

Thanks

I have an ac88 router with two ac68 repeaters. All on different SSID's. The ac68 repeaters connect to the ac88 using 5ghz and share the 5ghz channel. All three routers then broadcast their own 2.4ghz and 5ghz ssid. I have coverage everywhere in my house. I tried AiMesh too, very little control and shared 2.4ghz channel between all of the routers was a deal killer for me.

I also use the wired ports on the routers. The wireless throughput on the wired ports is almost in all circumstances better than a wireless card with this setup.
