Manual script run

This may seem like a stupid question but in Tomato you can put a script/command into a box in the GUI and hit a button labelled "Execute" (or something like that) and the instructions you have put in run straight away. Is there a similar feature in the Asus/Merlin firmware?

There is no such function in current Asuswrt-Merlin, I recall there was once but it was removed due to being impossible to secure - much more manageable to do what you need todo from an ssh command line.

Time to put XShell to the test; I've yet to download it so Putty can be replaced. And it's a good excuse for you to get familiar with SSH.

Closed-source payed application for secure SSH?
Maybe, but not sure.

Putty is beautiful.

So I assume your whole OS is also open sourced, yes?

XShell is free for personal use. I find Putty unusable for any serious work.

Ok, you're the boss, definitely :)
I ditched putty, kitty and what other Open Source ssh clients there are. None of them works as good as Xshell.
I mind the nagging "go pro" pop-up they introduced in the last version though.

I might fork out some $ and buy pro licenses to support their work though just to get rid of that message.

I was also a bit disappointed to see them add that message in the latest build. But like you, I'm tempted to send them some of the received donation money and get myself a pro licence (I've actually been considering it for quite some time). Xshell has been invaluable to my work these past few years. None of the hacked frontends that try to add multitab support to Putty/Kitty were stable/reliable. And as I can sometime find myself with no less than 5 SSH sessions open at once, a tabbed interface is mandatory for me.

Putty/Kitty might be fine for people only occasionally connecting to that single SSH server, but beyond that, you'll want something like SecureCRT (commercial) or XShell (dual license).

Haha, I have one of my 5 monitors dedicated to Xshell. Depending on what I am monitoring on my Servers I have about 6 to 10 consoles running. If you set a background color it's easy to tell the Servers apart.
I am not using Xftp yet, It seems a poor substitute to WinSCP. You have to have two separate Certificates though, one for putty (WinSCP) and one for Xshell. There is a handy puttygenerate command to convert putty certificates to be compatible with Xshell.

+1 for PuTTY, it's been good enough for me for many years, perhaps I like the now old fashioned appearance and the fact it is fully opensource, from an interesting author who also produces a collection of games http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/puzzles/ . I thought he was a Cambridge university academic, but see he now works for ARM.

I also use WinSCP both from windows and Linux hosts (using wine).

Thanks for the tips about Kitty/ XShell though, should I ever need to do serious work!

Kitty has a handy password storage function. It runs seamless with the saved Putty sessions.
