So its Jan 2022, and im still, seemingly at random, getting random lock ups or reboots. Currently running the latest ASUS Merlin 386.4. At this point i want to upgrade to something better that is more reliable than this unit. Is there a common thread on BCM used on this unit vs others? I ask because i want to stick with ASUS with something like the AX86U but would like to avoid these issues obviously. Ive never used a TP-Link device but im not opposed to them unless they are also having similar issues as evident by Amazon reviews.

I've upgraded my three RT-AX3000's to 386.4, and this is the first firmware update since 384.19 that's been stable for me. I had been experiencing random crashes and reboots on all 3 units with prior versions of 386.X (also happened on the stock Asus fw.)

But yeah, the AX58U / AX3000 model is definitely *not* the best Asus has to offer.

Do you have proof the ax58 is software limited and not cut on the die or pcb?
Yes. I had asked Asus about the capability being 2x2 or 4x4 when I had my RT-AX58U routers. As Asus wrote me, and also cited on Wikidevi, the RT-AX82U is 4x4 on the 5GHz band while the RT-AX58U is 2x4 on the 5GHz band. Both are 2x2 on the 2.4GHz band. The RT-AX58U is prevented in firmware from being 4x4 on the 5Ghz band.

Just an update on my RT-AX58U crash prone router. I know, from replies that some folks do not have any problems, but I do. Have tested quite a few versions of the firmware, the results are:

Version RT-AX58U_386.3_alpha2-g55206a0632 - Crash
Version MERLIN RT-AX58U_384.19_0_ - Works
Version RT-AX58U_386.4_beta2_ - Crash
Version RT_AX58U_300438645898.w - Crash
Version RT-AX58U_combo_3.0.0.4_386_48631 - Crash
Version 3.0.0.4_386.45674 Crash
Version 3.0.0.4_386.45898 Crash
Version 3.0.0.4_386.43588 Works
Version 3.0.0.4_386.47029 Works - Best so far, and back on this version after 48631.
Version 3.0.0.4_386.48631 Crash - Seemed ok for a few days

Cheers Bill D.

I was lucky that Asus, after sending me replacement RT-AX58U routers that also crashed, just offered to buy back my RT-AX58U. I got an RT-AX56U which except for lacking 160 MHz channel width does everything that the RT-AX58U does. The RT-AX56U quad core CPU is actually pretty solid.

Update on AX58U now running 48908 without problems.

After running Merlin version 386.7.2 for months without problems I tried Merlin version 388.1_beta2 which crashed. Back to 386.7.2. Quite the router as some seem to have problems and others don't, RMA'd once no change.
