One Internet connection - Two Private LANs Question

I just read the little how to on one internet two private lans .

since this how to is a few years old , is this still the best and easiest way ?

setting up this way I see a double nat . but I do need to read it in more detail .
but assuming your ISP allowed two ip's at no extra charge , couldn't you just use a gigaswitch ?

isp modem - switch -LAN 1
-LAN 2

I was asked by a family member to found out the best way to set this up .
one LAN needs to be locked down . small business
LAN 2 is for friends and family .

i have no issues with dbl nat as no one would be running any online gaming systems .

Yes, you can use a switch. That is how I was running for many years.

But you will need a router for each port.

Router 1 could be the business on LAN port 1 and Router 2 could be the personal on LAN port 2.

Managed switch was my first thought , then I saw everything with the two routers , three routers . lots of different options how there for sure .

Good call, I would going to suggest the same thing...

1 internet with 2 private LANs is easy and you only need 1 router however you will need a router that supports vlans and is configurable and a semi managed switch. It really depends on your skill level to configure such. My network is even more complicated even though its a personal network.

This can be achieved quite easily using mikrotik and a semi managed switch. There are 2 ways to go about this, either use VLANs all the way up to the router or use 2 ports on the router itself.

What makes this messy is that how do you divide internet usage between them which is why you need a configurable router like mikrotik aside from multiple networks sharing an internet. To make configuration simpler and easier to understand i suggest you use lists as you can actually define multiple networks as a single list and use that instead so LAN can be 192.168.1.0/24 and 192.168.2.0/24 and you can say from LAN to not LAN action masquerade. You can also use the same definitions in other lists so you can say From LAN 1 to LAN2 drop and vice versa to prevent 2 LANs from communicating. You than can divide internet speeds between them and set priorities and other things depending on how you want to treat them.
