Overclocked my AC56U with Merlins latest and CFE 1.0.1.9 and it survived a reboot.

nvram set clkfreq=1000,666
nvram commit
reboot

After reboot:

nvram get clkfreq returns 1000,666

Bogomips - cat /proc/cpuinfo:

Processor : ARMv7 Processor rev 0 (v7l)
processor : 0
BogoMIPS : 1998.84

processor : 1
BogoMIPS : 1992.29

I have a small USB fan running behind the router and CPU temps vary between 58c and 60c.

It's almost like the AC68U. The AC68 only worked with 533 and then I applied an official Asus patch and now it's 666. Though I am not sure what I put for the memory, I thought I did 800 but not sure.

Update: Guess not, running at 533.

admin@RT-AC56U:/tmp/home/root# nvram get clkfreq
1200,533
admin@RT-AC56U:/tmp/home/root#

You are quite right! Just apply she same clocks on my device, and it's normally starts.

667MHz i tried before reverts clock to default at boot time.

------
cat /proc/dmu/temperature (cpu : idle)
[800, 533] - 72C
[1000,666] - 73C

room - 25C

what about ram clks?

first one ran fine at 1400,800 after i downgraded the cfe from 1.0.2.3 to 1.0.1.9 (US)

the second one is still on 1.0.2.3, i just picked it up today. probably will flash it tomorrow

(DO NOT TRY 1600,800. i killed my first that way :\ )

How did you downgraded the CFE?

Just in case anyone wants to downclock (surprise!) 633/533 was the lowest that seemed to be kept upon reboot. 68 °C without cooling.
Can't get why everyone wants to overclock at all unless the router would have hundreds of clients and thousands of requests per second.
It 's still a dual core so that should be more then plenty enough power for regular router-tasks ...

Thanks a lot, justyourimage !!!

My AC56U was very hot for normal usage. I was trying to underclock it, but it never survived a reboot.
Thanks for your magic numbers, and finally my router is much cooler...

need to update cfe 1.0.2.8

ac56u i have cfe 1.0.2.3 so i cant reboot to keep the setting. but as long as i dont reboot they work. can i load a scrip so it will do it when i restart my router? i can set cpu to what ever just as long as i dont touch memoery 533, so do i loose much with cpu 1000 and mem 533

Hello!

I have a PC with i5 (3.2 GHz, 4 cores) and 4 Gb of RAM, and with Kerio Control installed (Linux) and using IPoE (without VPN) internet connection @ 95 mbit/s. I need only a router and a simple firewall.

What do you think about RT-AC56U with a small overclock (1 GHz)? Can this thing use two cores for routing? And what happens if this router is under weak to moderate (not heavy of course) SYN flood attack? What is more powerful, Kerio Control (it uses Debian core) with i5 or RT-AC56U? I think Kerio, but I think Kerio (Debian?) can use only one core in this case. Not sure about it though.

I need this for my home server

Can't find this version.

That firmware must have been released over a year ago. It's since been replaced by a lot of newer versions.

To enable 666MHz should flash any official latest firmware or yours? And restore factory defaults?
Thanks

Anything recent would do.

Don't work anymore, I tried all possible combinations with stock and Merlin firmwares, will revert to 800,533 after reboot, bootloader 1.0.2.3

Asus might have downgraded it back to 533 in a bootloader update. I wouldn't know, I'd rather not mess with my bootloaders.

does the OP's method still work? I wanna try 1GHz core 800MHz mem to increase USB3 output
can someone recommend an external USB fan? would these cheapies work blowing at the rear vents?

Just to let you know, I bought the RT-AC56U about two weeks ago.

I tried the method on the first page. Everytime, I tried to up the RAM frequency, the changes wouldn't hold. The changes only stuck if I kept the RAM at 533mhz. So basically only the three possibilities worked: 800,533 of course! 1000,533 and 1200,533.

Good luck!
