Photo on external drive?

I want to use DSPhoto but I want the photos stored on an external drive vs. within the photos folder that Synology creates.

I tried creating a share folder on the external drive and pointing DSPhoto to it, but it doesn't work. Any photos I take with my iPhone are still stored on the internal drive. I have a DS214j

Thoughts or suggestions?

put photos on ext. drive.
On synology, create share for that external USB drive's folder.
It'll be visible as if it were a folder on a drive internal to the synology.

Photos: Be SURE to have 2 or 3 copies of the photos, triple backup irreplacables.
