New Around Here
The pop over advertising (IDEA LIGHT BULB) that has started to appear on every page is really starting to annoy the crap out of me. I'm sure there are others who feel the same way. I understand that you need to advertise to pay the bills but this particular pop over is less than desirable IMHO.

Thanks for listening, and thanks for the great site!

Now it's even worse - the pop over has no apparent way to close the box. This is really a major PITA. Can you please fix?

Post a screen shot. I have no idea what you are talking about. To my knowledge, we don't run any pop over campaigns. You may have a compromised system

Pop Overs...

Post a screen shot. I have no idea what you are talking about. To my knowledge, we don't run any pop over campaigns. You may have a compromised system

I have about 10 desktops in my office running a mixture of XP and Win 7 and a mixture of AV/AM products (Avira, MS Security Essentials, Avast etc.). All malware scans are clean. I'm the only user of these systems, and I don't see the pop-over issue on any other sites but this one.

I see the popovers on all of my desktops including this one that was just freshly loaded with Win7 X64 last night. Browsers include IE8 and Chrome.

Here are some screen shots. The popovers are primarily Verizon ads, but I've seen a Canon ad also. I don't doubt that you are not purposefully running popovers, but if you are allowing a third party to rent ad space or fill space on your site then we know that just about anything is possible.

Thanks for your help and again thanks for the great site. The popovers appear to be flash, and from a quick look at the page source may be coming from Amazon.

Sorry for the problem, but I don't know what to tell you. We are not running any "popover" ads. I don't like them either.

Anyone else seeing this problem?

The only ad's I see are on the right hand side showing storage devices, rackmount stations and routers, nothing else.
Tho I am running firefox with ABP.
Now as for the web page my HTML Tidy results is showing 0 errors/ 30 warnings and a yellow"!".

I pulled your page apart using some of tools in Chrome and found the offending flash piece that apparently comes from the Amazon widgets that your page loads.

Here's the offending piece:

I've been running the carousels for quite some time and have had no problems with them.

I don't know why Amazon would be serving anything like this.

I will check with my ad partners to see if they are serving anything like this.

Ad has been paused while we find out what's going on. Sorry for the problem.

Grrrr.

Internet.
Cell phone.
Land line.
TV.
Radio.
Billboards.
US Mail.

God All Mighty, do the marketeers GET IT that we are desensitized?

If it were not for advertising support, SmallNetBuilder would not be possible.

I'm very selective on the ads and ad types that I allow.

This incident was an error and not intentional.

I get pop-ups also.

I go to select a page, the page loads, and while I'm reading, an add suddnly pops up and covers half my screen.

Anoying as hell i must concur!

The original problem that prompted this thread has been fixed.

Please tell me the advertiser and whether you can close the ad. A screenshot would also be helpful.

Smallnetbuilder does not run popup advertising or self-expanding ads.

There is a link to close the add 'immediately' at the bottom of the picture although its not shown in the screen shot. But, after I come to this site, after a few seconds something like this always pops up and covers my screen.

For example, I hit the link to contest #39 and that review loads, but after about 5 seconds the image above pops up and I must close it manually. Although i imagine that if i waited long enough it will close by itself. I do not get these on ANY other sites.

EDIT: I just noticed that it is the same as the banner add you have at the top of the screen.

That's an interstitial ad, not a pop-up. It should only appear once per browser session and between pages. It should not open by itself while you are viewing a page.

This type of ad is quite common on sites because it pays very well.

for what it's worth, maybe I don't see this pop-up due to ABP I am using with Firefox
