Potential Fix to failing RT-AC87U 5ghz Radio

Hi Folks,

So I've also been having issues with the 5ghz radio failing on my RT-AC87U. My thermals are fine well within the acceptable range, but regardless the 5ghz radio to fail after a few minutes of traffic on it.

I've tried the latest Asus FW, and the latest Merlin FW but unfortunately nothing seems to work.

I then rolled back to the last version i knew was working properly (had to use the Asus recovery utility, because their firmware was being difficult) and upgrade fw till it broke again. so it seems that Merlin's 376.49.5 is the latest version that works with the 5ghz radio. Its been stable for about 12 hours now.

unfortunately this FW version doesn't the proper TLS version so my openvpn server doesn't work anymore.. but at least i have 5ghz coverage...


Now the question is what changed after 376.49.5 that started breaking the 5ghz radio..

edit: dug a little bit into the change logs, and the next release after 376.49.5 was the 378.50 beta 1, among the change is listed

* Updated Quantenna firmware/driver

I'm curious if this new firmware could be the cause? on the off chance you're reading this RMerlin - would it even be feasible to use the older Quantenna firmware with the later releases?

Damn well still stable performance so far. Still feels like this is a ticking time bomb lol. Wonder if the RT-AC3100 is better..
