RT-AC56U VPN client- best firmware?

I have been having trouble with the built in OpenVPN and PPTP clients. I am running the latest Asus WRT firmware ending in 374_5656. Would Merlin or DD-WRT have updated VPN clients? I really like the Asus interface but I don't like having to reboot the router every couple of days. Don't care about USB, printing, etc ... Just want a stable VPN connection.
