RT-AC68U 5ghz SSD Vanished if channels above 40 are used

ShimmerUK

New Around Here
I've noticed since ASUSU new Firmwares That if you select a custom 5ghz channel above 40 the SSD will Vanish?

But I noted that this also occurs with Merlins new 376.49_5 Firmware as well so the problem seems to have been incorporated into his FWs as well.

I am Curious to know if this is a bug or has in fact been done on purpose?

I know there are certain demands that only certain Channels can be used but even the one that are meant to be allowed above 36-40 don't work.

I also noted in the wireless professional option I cannot turn of the Regulation mode It will just turn it self back onto 802.11d+h for 5ghz will work for 2.4ghz

Can't really understand your post, but if you're having issues you may want to reset to factory defaults and then setup the router manually (do not use a config backup file). Also use a new ssid to ensure that all your client devices use the newest microcode to get the best from the routers new firmware.

These two steps fixes many glitches.

I All ready tried all that including a hard reset.

It's is not a Problem with residual settings from previous firmwares It is a problem with in the new ASUS Firmwares That if you go to your 5ghz settings and choose a Custom Channel above 36-44 You will no longer be able to see or connect to the 5ghz wireless anymore.

As for the Regulation mode I think that is actual something that Merlin may have added and it does say off by default but when I choose that option is won't stay off it will revert back to selecting 802.11d+h.

Unlike the 2.4ghz where you can Turn regulation mode to off and it will stay off.

So there is a few little issue with 5ghz it seems.

Also the Only Device I got that uses the 5ghz is my gaming PC and that uses a PCE-AC68 Adapter so it supports everything that the RT-AC68U can do

What can I say? I don't have such problems (if I'm understanding the issues correctly) on the routers I support.

Sounds like your browser or settings are interfering or giving you results that you don't expect (but maybe should).

I can clear up at least one part....

If you have an 'EU' router (that is EU is specified in the CFE/bootloader along with the default regulation revision codes), the code will force 802.11d+h (DFS and TPC support), overriding the user selection. It's been that way for a long time, at least back to the 374.43 code.

Ah I see Yes then that does explain that.

Could also be why the Channels Won't work above 36-44? as there classed as DFS Channels while 36-48 are DFS Free

I noticed the same issue when choosing higher 5ghz channels. Running the Merlin folk by John, with Iceland region settings (maybe it is something to do with this? http://forums.smallnetbuilder.com/showthread.php?t=19262) Can't see it on any of my devices. Tried on Nexus 6, Samsung S5 and a PCE-AC68.

Is there a way to resolve this issue?

If you changed the country code to IS you may actually be running into the opposite problem in that 802.11h will NOT be forced. It seems some client wireless drivers are coded to require seeing the DFS/TPC info. Try setting the regulation mode to 802.11h or 802.11d+h and see if that helps (do a reboot after 'applying' the setting to make sure that it takes).

The firmware code will only enable DFS if the region is set to EU. This is another reason why people shouldn't change their region unless they fully understand what it entails.

Just enabling 802.11d+h isn't enough, there are additional low-level configurations required by the firmware for DFS to be enabled.

Having N66U here - on 376.48 regulation mode can be set to "off" and it stays like this. Only updating to 376.49 will start this behaviour. This is 'EU' router and CC is not modified.

Thanks, I'll try EU :) I was having trouble finding all the channels on 5ghz that were legal in the UK. Not sure what region it was set to before but I think it only went to channel 110.

This is all interesting but I far as I am aware my router should be a EU router And before I updated to ASUS latest firmware I did not have any Issue's with selecting Channels.

As for the regulation mode my Issue is that is it forced on to 802.11d+h and I cannot change it as it will just revert straight back but only for the 5ghz does not for the 2.4ghz

Also I did try the DFS option and it will have the same issue I can no longer See the SSD now I've may have come to a new conclusion.

That it is actually my wireless card the ASUS PCE-AC68 that might be the problem not the Router I've a 2nd wireless card that when I've time I will be testing.
