Hello,

I currently had a couple of issues with Wi-Fi on my RT-AX86U and I sent it for RMA. Anyway, I set up my AC86U(which was a aimesh node), as the main router while I wait.

The issue that's been going on is that the Wi-Fi clients get disconnected and the router cannot add them back on, even if I manually try on the computer to connect it is unable, only a few appear to make it including ethernet devices.

I have tried WPS + Facto Res, stock firmware, merlin and many other things.

Maybe this one need replacement too. But it works flawlessly in node mode. Never had an issue.

I would tend to agree if the problem persists with Asuswrt firmware, reset and minimally configured to test, and with nothing else wired to the router, and with the router located differently, out and away and in the clear... perhaps even on a different power circuit/breaker.

I'll try with no ethernet devices connected, as per location is in the middle of an open location. I have tested the Wi-Fi signals and there's no interference, nor I have neighbors with Wi-Fi that reach my home. As per the electrical part, I always connect the router to a Battery Backup(UPC). But ill try your suggestions, who knows, that how tech like to mess up with our minds lol. Thanks.

Yeah, it helps to think outside the box... and to not rule things out too soon. It is a bit unusual for both routers to have trouble, so I'd look for external causes like connected equipment.

The AC86U has a history of burning up a power circuit chip, running hot, and some radio issues. Login and use this link to see the CPU temp: http://router.asus.com/ajax_coretmp.asp (assumes router admin is set for http, not https).

Additionally, i have two fans connected to the usb port and attached to the back of the AC86U because i read a lot about the heat issues.

As for the other router(AX) I think even thought we could think something is going on, that apparent similar issues are happening, both are different and isolated issues, ASUS know something is going on with the version of AX86U i got, they RMA the device asking nothing other than the device serial number, when I provided them with the results of my testing. But, I will keep testing out. Thanks!

Those temps look ok... rule of thumb is no higher than 80-85% of chip junction temp, Tj (100C for the CPU).

Regarding USB fans... be sure they are not drawing too much current from the router power circuit... i.e. test without them.

Update on AC86U: 2 weeks after and the router was stable I notice a couple of devices drops, but they could connect back. I don't know what's going on, I did not change any configs, i tested without fans and with them on the power and behaviour was the same.

Update on AX86U: Asus never got to find what the issue was, even after replacing the Wi-Fi chipset. My old router was Hardware version 1.0. They sent a replacement. Which is also Hardware 1.0, it is using latest merlin 386.7_2, It is working good but I notice drops, very rare but they are there. Ethernet works flawlessly. There is no interference as I don't have any other Wi-Fi devices within the same band in the transmission channel. And the laptop I'm using both are within 10 feet of the router, both detected the drop for like a second. One on AX the other on AC.
 
Are you simply too close to the router with your laptop? Do the drops occur if you're further away (at least 3 metres)?
