RT-N66U Sudden 5 Ghz WiFi Speed Drop

SDennett

New Around Here
Hello everyone,

I have an RT-N66U as my router for FIOS (75/35 Mbps). We do a lot of video streaming to Tivos & iPads, which until recently worked well. However, yesterday my wife complained that Netflix on her iPad kept stopping.

I ran speediest.net and found that the speed of 5Ghz DOWNLOAD connections had dropped by 2/3, yet the UPLOAD speeds were unchanged, e.g., download 23 mbps and upload 38 mbps. For comparison, connecting via another 5 ghz access point on my LAN, I get download 80 mbps and upload 38 mbps. (The speed for the ASUS' 2.4 Ghz connection are unchanged).

I haven't made any configuration changes, and am running Merlin's firmware version 3.0.0.4.374.38_2. I tried unplugging the router and then plugging it back in, checking antenna adjustment, and checking for overheating. Also checked to see if the neighbors might have come online with a new router that might be interfering with mine (nope).

So, I'm stumped. Could it be some kind of hardware failure? I welcome any suggestions for diagnosing or solving this problem.

Thanks for your help,

Steve

Are you able to power down the modem/ONT for half an hour or so?

You may also want to try the latest Asus beta firmware 2239 which I have seen great results with.

I don't think it could be a hardware failure, but you may also want to try the -374.38_2-em version first (after upgrading, reset to defaults, 'forget' wireless profiles on all devices and setup the router manually).

I have had the same think happen to me tonight with the same build and router. I changed the client to 2.4 and my speed came back. I will give the Asus beta a go tomorrow.

Used the Asus beta 2239 - I have just had a drop out on the 5GHz band. I had to connect to the 2.4GHz SSID and reconnect to the 5GHz SSID to be reconnected. I did not need to reboot the router or desktop - the routing is showing a uptime of 3days , 17 hours, 58min.

Event log does not give me anything about wireless dropping.

This is on a Windows 8.1 Machine using a TP-LINK TL-WDN4800 Wireless Dual Band PCI Express Adapter.
