Safest way to flash AC68u from ddwrt

I have an AC68U running dd-wrt and want to flash Merlins firmware. What is the safest way to do this?

iirc, renaming .trx to .bin is sufficient

As a safeguard, do

nvram get http_username
nvram get http_passwd

and write down the results. DD-WRT encrypts the password (and maybe the username), and if something goes amiss, you could get locked out of the router.
