Severe Reduction in WAN speeds when connected to modem

So I moved a few weeks ago and TWC just completed setting up my internet connection. I'm paying for a 50/5 connection and I'm receiving that speed (surprisingly) when directly plugged into the modem/router they gave me. However, when I plug my Asus RT-AC66U into the modem and run a speed test through it, I receive results around .8/5. Something is happening to severely reduce my downstream, but not touch my upstream connection. The weirdest part is that it was running perfectly fine in my living room for three or four days. It only started doing this when I moved the Asus and modem into my office.

I've tried the latest Merlin build, dd-wrt build, and older versions of stock and I'm still seeing the same results. I don't think the router's broken, I think there's a setting on either my side or their side that needs changed and, because I can't log into the modem, I can't figure out what to change.
 
Have you tried a different Ethernet cable? Is there anything plugged in you can remove to at least test without on your network?
 
I've tried several different ethernet cables and I've tried with no more than one device cabled into the router. The strange thing is that when I do not have the router plugged into the modem and test LAN speeds between multiple devices, they're fine. The problem exists on the WAN connection only.
 
Have you tried changing what kind of ISP connection you have selected on the RT-AC66U? It may have been changed inadvertently or by design (Auto) by the firmware itself.

If that doesn't solve things - you should do a full reset to defaults and then manually enter all settings (do not do backup restore).

If the problem persists; then router needs to be replaced.

As a quick check: can you use another router before doing the above?


Oh; try setting the MAC address of the router to the MAC address of either your modem or your computer you used to test directly with the modem.
 
Have not tried these configurations yet. Will give them a go tonight and post results.

I actually do not have a spare. Asking around now to hopefully find something I can use.
 
Tried all of the above from the stock firmware - no go. Is this thing seriously bricked?

I doubt it. Just unplug your cable modem from electrical outlet for 20 minutes. Or call your ISP to reset your connection and bridge your modem.
 
I actually just got off the phone with them and I'm pretty sure the problem is on their side. To put this in perspective, I was pinging Google's Public DNS servers, TWC's DNS servers, my work, and Yahoo.com and the pings were dropping like flies - this is connected directly to the modem from a gig NIC.

They're sending someone out tomorrow to check lines and replace this device. Hopefully that fixes it. I'm actually now starting to see the benefits in owning my own modem as well...

Usually if you just unplug your modem for 10-20 minutes it will reset your connection. If you start swapping devices/routers/computers and plugging them in to your modem, you're going to have nothing but problems. Your modem/ISP relies on a MAC address. You keep changing the MAC address by plugging different stuff in the modem.

My theory is when you moved your modem, you unplugged it and it reset the connection. And the first thing you plugged in to it was something besides your asus router.

Just connect the asus to the modem, and then unplug the modem from electrical outlet for 20 minutes and you should be good to go.
 
I actually tried something like that today. I tried a couple things this morning and, before leaving for work, simply unplugged everything from everything. It was all left this way throughout the day and, upon returning home from work, I received the same results.
 
So I borrowed a linksys router from a coworker yesterday, took it home, and plugged it into my modem. It worked perfectly. No dropped pings, max speeds, and zero connection issues. At this point, I'm ~95% sure it's that router.

Asus has a 2 year warranty, correct?
