Hi Guys,
I as looking for a way to easily wake my HTPC when I was away from home without opening UDP port 9 to the world (which I have working), and think I have a good idea, but I'm unsure on how to implement it on Merlin's firmware.

I've gone down the route of entware and transmission on the RT-AC66U, and thought I'd be able to get a shell script to fire when I hit a particular custom web page, which I'd be able to access when I was attached to the VPN server running on the router.

So, I'd attach to my home PPTP VPN server, then open a browser and hit http://192.168.1.1/transmission/web/WOL_HTPC.cgi which would call a shell script to send the magic packet.

I'm good for the shell script, but I'm at a loss as to getting CGI scripting working - I thought I'd be able to hang it off the transmission web as it's on a read/write USB drive... but I'm not sure where to start.

Any ideas much appreciated, and Merlin's firmware is much appreciated :)

Cheers,
Yoggit

Why not simply use the WOL page that already exists in the firmware?

Thanks for the feedback guys.

I'd prefer to use a shortcut to the WOL page, but logging in (on a phone), navigating to it, etc. isn't exactly convenient.

Yes, another app is an option (which I currently use), but when I have a router with the ability do do it via a web front end, I can't help thinking that a simple shortcut on my phone would be the neatest, easiest solution.

Imagine having this shortcut on your handset:-
http://[router-ip]/somedir/MyWOL.asp?mac=010BCD012345&ip=192.168.1.5

Sorry for the s-l-o-w response... distractions!

And a MASSIVE thanks to you Merlin for all of your awesome work!

Thanks again,
Yoggit

...well, why don't you just bookmark the WOL hmtl page..isn't that what you mean by "having a shortcut"?

The page can be reached at http://<your-router-ip>/Main_WOL_Content.asp.
I use my VPN access to my home/into the ASUS, then call the WOL page...voilá.

If you have android you could use script kitty or similar to run an etherwake-command at the touch of a button, it will log onto the router and issue the specified command.

Or can you not just install a wol app on your phone or will magic packets not work over vpn?
