SSID password changes itself.

Setting up new Asus RT-AX88U Pro.

Advanced, Wireless tab < 2.4g, create ssid and key, go to 5g, create different ssid and different password, go back to 2.4 to check key, stays the same, then go to 5g to check the key and it changes to the key that was used for the 2.4g.
This is on a new router, sent first one back because of this, and the second does the same thing.
Only does this with asus stock firmware, not with asuswrt merlin.
Smart connect disabled.
Hitting apply after change.
Asus Stock Firmware < Version 3.0.0.6.102_33352
Asuswrt-Merlin < Ver.3004.388.8.4

Browser Auto Fill playing games with you perhaps?

its a simple setting during setup, I thought I was crazy, but thats what it is doing, didnt do it on my old rt-ac88u router that was purchased in 2016. but that had asuswrt on it from the day I set it up.

No one else reported this issue... 🤷‍♂️

Your solution is to use Dual Band SmartConnect

dont want to use that, why does it work with asuswrt? I tried several times, flashing back and forth, does the same thing everytime with stock asus firmware.

Have you tried using a different web browser and or a different computer/device to setup the router?
Have you tried a hard factory reset? With the flashing back and forth between firmware's its possible something got corrupted.

The exact same thing happens with Protected Management Frames setting, it shows wrong setting from another band while switching.

Emptying cache & refresh is a temporary fix, so I made a habit of flushing cache via keyboard shortcut and reloading the page before changing&saving anything on Wireless - General settings.

It was suggested to try a different computer, I tried on a different computer with AMD processor, Asus stock firmware works correctly, the wireless keys don’t change, but on the intel computer the keys won’t stay as you set them, on the network map, wireless tab they are correct, but different than what is set in the wireless tab < only on intel computer.
Intel Computer < will only work correctly with merlin.
AMD Computer < works fine with asus or merlin firmware.
Also the hard reset method where you hold the wps button and turn the router of and on doesn’t work the setup page will not come up, brings up the login page for the router.
It will work if you use the red reset button.

That would seem to indicate a specific problem with the Intel computer or more likely it's web browser and what ever add-ons or extensions that may be loaded onto it. Double check that the browser isn't auto filling the password field with a previously saved password.

A hard factory reset for your model goes as follows:
1. Turn the router off.
2. Press and hold the WPS button and turn the router on.
3. Power light is on (keep holding the WPS button).
4. Release the WPS button after the power light is off.
5. Reboot your router by manually pressing the power button.

You actually turn the RT-AX88U Pro router off and on twice. Turn off the first time, then while holding the WPS button in turn the router on. Wait until the power light goes off while still pressing the WPS button. Then release the WPS button and turn the router off. Then turn the router back on using the power button/switch and see if it reset the router and you get the QiS page..

I have a cloned disc of the Intel computer when I reformatted a couple months ago I'll try that tomorrow.

Nothing to do with your CPU, it was happening to me on M3 Mac & Safari. Probably your two computers have different versions of browsers/settings/plugins.

It could also happen on a fresh browser - you need to select 5Ghz after loading the 2.4Ghz page.

My suggestion is empty your browser cache just before navigating to the 5Ghz page.

To be sure, you are clicking Apply before switching bands, right?

There was a problem similar to this on the RT-AX86U Pro. I reported it and ASUS finally fixed it. After you switch bands, do a forced browser refresh (Shift + F5) and see if the correct value shows.

Not 100% sure, but it makes sense. I always encountered it while setting up the router.

Maybe we have different UI views, because on my GT-AX6000 running beta 3, with SmartConnect off, I see the basic settings for the two bands, on a single (segmented) page. Complete with having separate settings for Protected Management Frames on that page!
