Strange smart plug behaviour, can anyone explain?

I have load of smart home gear. One item is a Meross smart plug, that is Alexa and HomeKit compatible (I use both). My router is an Asus AX88U plus an XD4 is Air Mesh.

Initially the plug connects and works fine (green LED for internet connection). But after a day or so Alexa stops working and the LED goes amber. When I look in my routers connected devices list is isn’t there anymore (is when working fine).

But here is the weird thing I don’t understand - I can still control the play with HomeKit. This doesn’t make any sense, as it doesn’t as far as I am aware have any other type of connection like BtLE or zigbee. How can it appear to drop its WiFi connection and still be controlled (with HomeKit only)?

It’s been mentioned elsewhere that a possibility is that it could be connected to the router, but the router isn’t properly recognising it. This doesn’t make sense to me, but could there be something to this?
