Use a static route instead of WAN

I have an N66U (running 374.43) behind my primary router (which is a different brand) and I would like to use the primary router in place of the WAN address (the two routers are connected by a cable connection on their lan ports). Is this possible?

I tried disabling the WAN address. But when I point my pc to the N66U (as a default gateway), I get this error page about WAN disconnection. I tried disabling the error page in WAN settings in the web interface, but it made no difference. I have set up a script in jffs to add a route to the primary router along with a nameserver setting in resolv.conf and the router itself can resolve addresses without any problems. It is the client part that has got me stumped.

?????

Let me see if I understand:

Your 2 routers are connected LAN to LAN.
There is nothing connected to the WAN port of the N66U, so you are just using it as a switch and DHCP/DNS server.
Your primary router is your internet gateway device which has a different IP address to the N66U (but on the same subnet).
Your primary router is not running DHCP.

If this is the case then it sounds like you want to set LAN > DHCP Server > Default Gateway to the IP address of your primary router. Your client PCs will then use the primary router as their default gateway.

I don't use dhcp on the N66U; only on the primary router. So the settings on the PCs all point to the primary router and they can all browse the internet without any problems. The reason I want to use a route as WAN setting on the N66U is that I want to use a chromecast which is within range of the N66U but not the primary router. The chromecast connects to N66U but not the internet. As a test, I connected a PC manually to the N66U (default gateway to N66U lan address, dns to primary router address), but the PC could not connect to the internet either as described in my first post.

You need to configure your N66U as an "accesspoint only".

This generally means disable DHCP-server and set a static IP-address (to be ably to access it for configuration).

This
(default gateway to N66U lan address,
is exactly what you should NOT have.
