Using Windows Server To Number Crunch

Ian Holl

Occasional Visitor
I have a spare PC that is running Server 2016. Is it possible to use this machine to do the number crunching for a VPN? If so how? I'm currently using my Asus AC87U with Open VPN client, but the router's CPU is only giving me 40Mbps appose to the 60Mbps connect speed.

I'm currently using IPVanish, but will a Windows Server VPN service mean I can ditch the VPN subscription? If I use a Windows server VPN AFAIK my IP will visible to the webserver I'm connecting to, but will my ISP be able to see what servers I'm connecting to?

They both serve completely different purposes. Having a VPN server within your LAN will in no way obfuscate your traffic as it goes through your ISP - it would only obfuscate traffic inside your LAN. Everything going from your Windows server to the Internet would be back in the clear.

The point of running a local VPN server is only for remote access, while you're outside of home.
