WAN stuck on 10 Full Duplex

Help!

About two months ago, I was getting about 30 Mbps up/down. This past week, however, I noticed that it slowed down considerably. On the speedtest, I'm only getting about 9.8 Mpbs up/down.

After two days with Cox trying to figure out my cable modem/router (Motorola sbg6580), and hours of checking out settings and trying new firmware, I discovered that my WAN seems to be stuck on 10 Full Duplex--which explains so much.

I had been running Merlin's firmware (whatever was fresh from March). No changes to my network--just noticed slower speeds. When my switch is connected straight to my SBG6580, I am getting the fast speeds again.

After trying the latest Merlin firmware, going back to stock latest Asus firmware, then back to Merlin's firmware--I am noticing that the speeds are still slow when I connect my switch back to the Asus router (which is then connected back to the SBG6580).

Any idea?

I have not made any hardware changes leading up to the slow down. I just noticed that it was really slow.

Do you think I have a hardware issue? I have reset every component in my network multiple times thinking that would help. I do notice that if I remain on the RT-N66U's Sysinfo page (on Merlin's firmware), as the whole system tries to reconnect to the Motorola, the WAN blips "100 Full Duplex", then says "Down" for a few seconds, then reappears at "10 Full Duplex."

Tried replacing the cable between modem and router? It could be a bad cable.

Also ensure your modem is configured for auto-negotiate (if it has a web interface allowing you to configure it). Do not force it to a specific speed, or it will conflict with the router's auto-negotiation.

Yeah. I've tried a few CAT6 and CAT5e cables. Still stuck on 10.

I went to every page I could find on my modem's web interface and was not able to find anything resembling an auto-negotiate (or speed control of any sort). When I did connect my switch directly to it (which has all my computers connected to it), I was able to exceed the 10 Mbps.

This would be fairly easy to troubleshoot if it is your router or cable modem that is the issue.

Just set your router to a static address and plug the WAN port into another known 1000M Full port off a gigabit switch or likewise.

Also, you can remove the router and hook your computer directly up to the cable modem to verify it connects higher than 10M....

I have done the latter--when I connect my switch directly to the router (where all my office systems are connected to), I get my fast speeds again (around 30 Mbps). When I put the router back in the mix, that's when it drops.

When I did connect the router's WAN to a GigE switch, it definitely shows up as a different color LED than the other GigE devices that are connected to it.

I've heard of ports going bad--as in no longer working, but why is this port still working, but just at a slower speed?

I used the latest one available on the MediaShare. However, this started on it's own over the past week when I haven't touched the firmware at all. It just went from close to 30 Mbps to slightly less than 10 Mbps without me doing anything to the router.

The strange thing here is that you only get 10 Mbit/s. With a damaged port I'd expect no traffic at all or 100 Mbit/s (if just one pin/wire is damaged you never get gigabit, but usually 100 Mbit/s no matter which pin/wire is broken).

Exactly. I'm not sure why I'd be getting any traffic at all.

I wonder if there's any type of command string I can input in Merlin's interface to force that WAN link to operate correctly.

I don't know how the Motorola SBG6580 auto configures it's LAN connections but it is a combination modem/gateway. Since I don't exactly know your setup I can only offer this is only a suggestion to consider. If you have other devices connected to the other LAN ports of the Motorola it could be possible that the Motorola is auto negotiating with the Asus WAN port at 100 or 10 instead of 1000. If you only have 30 down and other devices connected to other ports on the Motorola then for some reason it might be limiting your speeds to the Asus router. One question would be whether you get the same result using another router other than Asus. That might tell you that it's more likely an issue with the Motorola.

I guess it's time to pick up another router. I was hoping not to do that.

If it makes things simpler, I'm attaching my setup. The GigE router is the Asus RT-N66U.
