If you want to go with Asus, I would suggest RT-AC86U or RT-AX88U. These two are the only ones with hardware acceleration for VPN and merlin-firmware support.
These do not cost 1000$ though .
If you have a large house you could also buy AiMesh Nodes.
I do not really know other brands but Asus.
