In the web UI for this asus ax88u (http://router.asus.com/Advanced_System_Content.asp) there's a field for Network Monitoring - Ping Target with a help text of:

"The IP address of the target host where the router is sending ping packets continuously"

What does this do and why it is useful?

I mean, if it tracked packet loss to google over time, I could see how that might be useful to indicate some kinds of issues with your ISP, but I don't see anything like that in the UI.

Anyone know?

Thanks.

It pings the specified target to determine whether or not it has a functioning connection to the internet. If it doesn't it shows an appropriate message in Network Map and (by default) redirects client's browsers to an error page (Enable WAN down browser redirect notice).
