I have DS115j and DS216j and would like to upgrade
what I want
- SFP+ with ability to switch to 10Gbaset later (I have a switch with SFP+ now so everything within the rack in the basement would easily connect , while my house is wired for cat6)
- at least 4 bays
- prefer to stay within synology/qnap brands
- would like to keep this under $100 per bay (without HDD) if possible
- rack mounted is ok if the premium is <50% over same hardware in desktop version
- run unifi controller on always on device (behind the UPS)

so I looked at Synology lines first and am not seeing great hardware choices
- 10G is not built in
- where 10G is optional , it is far above my desired budget
- anything I see with Intel CPU does not have SFP+

QNAP looks much better for hardware , however I can not find good match either
- the X line (951x, 932x, 963x) look right but are fixed to their perspective 10G choices and do not have a PCI slot to later put in an upgrade card. I also do not know how well Unifi would run in ARM on 932X
- 832X is 8 bays, cheap, ARM, SFP+ built in, with PCI slot to put the card for later. this is probably the closest to what I want. is there something like this with non-arm CPU?

QNAP has more 10GbE capable NASes than Synology.

All models that have PCIe slots can take QNAP's 10GbE cards. Some may not come with a 10GbE card.

You might want to check the 10GbE devices for power requirements and heat dissipation. The 10GbE switches seem to put off a lot more heat and use more electricity. This can be a problem if you are using it in a closet or confined space.

You can always build your own, grab some 2nd hand mellanox SFP+ cards. SFP+ switches are cheaper and SFP+ is only cheaper than 10Gbe if you are using SFP+ direct less than 5 meters, otherwise the module pricings are what kills you.

Thank you guys
1. I spent a lot of time with qnap NAS selector/product filter
- too many models
- anything with SFP+ that I see does not have intel CPU and I am not sure I can easily run UniFi controller on ARM
-the 9**X line (951X, 932X, 963X) , look good, but it is fixed to one of the specific 10G interfaces, no ability to change it later

2. my play switch is Brocade ICX 6450 that has 4 SFP+ ports. I have no switches with 10GBe RJ45 , I am interested in getting them however not sure I want to spend $500+ for switch from UBNT. Thus initial focus on something SFP+ compatible.

3. to build my own server- I have few hardware pieces lying around, 2xConnect X3 cards, some SFP+ AOC cables already. the problem is that server<>NAS, and I would then have to maintain it, etc. I've run Ubuntu before, Win 2012/2016, played with Xpenology (like it but too unpredictable for any real use outside of play as any update may brick you)

so I may just separate everything out
- get unifi controller ver 2 from UBNT store ($200)
- let Shield do the Plex
- leave NAS to be NAS, either get 832X now (SFP+ built in and PCIE slot to put in CAT6 10GBE later) or simply put 12 TB drives into existing 216j and revisit next year

I dont know why if a unifi controller worked for a branded NAS that it shouldnt work for a DIY NAS. a DIY NAS will do everything a branded NAS can do and more, the only different is setting it up yourself. You can pick a full linux OS or go for a specialised one like openNAS and many others.

But the decision is up to you between DIY and getting a premade one.
