5Ghz Speed not even touching 300Mbps

New Around Here
hi guys,

not sure if i messsed up any settings, but i cant get the 5Ghz band to cross even 300Mbps

i have checked on 2 different laptops running Intel wireless card. i have updated the drivers on either machine but the speed simple doesnt improve. Sometimes its shows up 40Mbps.

Wireless Mode is N only, bandwidth is 20/40 Mhz.

i previously owned RT-N56U which got fried due to lighting would constantly provide 300Mbps. Not sure if i have a defective piece with me.

Any suggestion would help a ton.

Yes, the 216Mb/s connection is what I get on 2.4GHz. with 20MHz. channel width. On the other hand, I'm getting 450Mb/s connection on 5GHz with 40MHz. channel width.

This is with RMerlin's 3.0.0.4_270.26b firmware. I tried the later firmware (3.0.0.4_354.nn), and I can't connect with 40MHz. channel width on 5GHz., also, so I dropped back to 270.26b.

So I agree with the advice to try RMerlin's 3.0.0.4_270.26b firmware.

Curious!

What NIC are you using? I have the centrino advanced n 6235 (latest driver) and i'm getting a steady 300Mb/s. Inssider reports that my ap is broadcasting at 450Mb/s with signal strength -50dBm set to 40mhz with no other 5ghz ap showing. I'm currently running 3.0.0.4.270.26.

sorry for the delay in replying.

i have one laptop with intel centrino ulimate n 6300 AGN and the other is DW1520 Wireless N.

Both machines are in the same room as the router, no walls in between.

I will post my observation after trying Merlin's 270 firmware.

I am having a similar issue here.on a mid2012 MacBook Air and rt on Merlin build 270,inssider reports 75!!!! On the 5 ghz while the Mac reports connection speed at 300.settings on the rt is n only at 40mhz but even if I change something,I still get reports of 75.my 2,4 network is on 216.any ideas?thanks!!!

Linksys AE3000...Ralink-based. Both my laptop and the router report 450Mb/s, but that's not throughput, that's the connection. Haven't measured actual throughput. I think that we're using the same firmware, I assume that you mean .26b (the "b" doesn't show on the router firmware version on the web GUI).

My laptop is about a meter away from the router most of the time, though, not even across the room. I do get a good connection on my iPad across the house on 5GHz., though, surprisingly, almost my full download speed.

Don't know if im running 26b or not :P

My laptop is 3m away from the router and in the same room with good "visibility", so to speak. I'm getting great speeds (12mb/sec) just seems odd that win8 won't show me connected @ 450Mbit/s. I have bluetooth on but that doesn't affect 5ghz, only 2.4ghz.

According to your firmware timestamp, you aren't using 270.26b (the latest .26 version). The timestamp for 26b is "Sun Mar 17 19:23:55 UTC 2013", a little later than yours.

According to the changelog, this is the only change between .26 and .26b:

3.0.0.4.270.26b
- FIXED: Volume labels with spaces were rejected (Asus used the same code to validate hostnames and volume labels)

which would only affect you if you were using a USB disk that had a volume label with embedded space(s). So it really doesn't seem to matter a lot if you have .26 or .26b, as long as you don't need that fix *smile*.

I think that the connection speed displayed is more a wireless client interface driver issue than anything else.

What version of windows are you running? 32 bit version maxes out at 216 Mbps and the 64 bit version will give you the 450 Mbps.

I am running 64 bit win7 Home premium and 32bit Win7 enterprise on the other.

I get stable speed with merlin 26b FW. but it will graze around 216. occasional 300. i am only seated 5 ft from the router.

Why is that?

That's just the way it is 32 is half of 64 so you get half the speed. 32 bit system is slower then a 64 bit system. Try it on both systems and you will see. I did that and came to that conclusion after talking to Microsoft and Edimax.

The memory address space of the OS has nothing to do with the number of concurrent streams or channel width a wireless card can connect to.

Thank you for your input Merlin. So Microsoft and Edimax lied to me. I also found this. I will have to do more research on this. Thanks again.

Network services

Windows gives access to the many types of networking techniques and abilities to form the different type of networks . The components provided of the networking involves Net bios, RPC, Winsock and Net DDE. The only networking service difference present in 32 and 64 bit windows is the response rate that is much faster in 64 bit due to the higher bit rate and greater throughput rate.

Are you running a 300 Mbps or 450 Mbps wireless adapter? It could be other wireless networks causing you interference and the Mbps is dropping.

All you guys get 300 speeds on inssid?i get 75 on 5ghz network no matter what firmware.on my Mac though it says connection speed as 300...I get 216 on the 2,4.go figure....

I'm using an Edimax EW-7733UnD wireless adapter and getting a constant 450 Mbps on the 5 Ghz band with Merlin's .270.26b. This is a very good wireless adapter for only $39.99 at Newegg.
