AC3200 - UPnP on PPPoE question and connection "wake up" problem

And... Now, for something completely different. :-D

ASUS RT-AC3200 - PPPoE internet connection (User/Pass variety)

Question #1: If I disable UPnP... The WAN connection is lost. Is UPnP somehow required for PPPoE? Or, is it that my provider hardware (modem?) requires it? Like most "users", I never really considered it a problem until I recently became a (somewhat) more security conscious user.

Issue #1: When we wake up in the morning, the internet will not connect. PPPoE is set to "always on". And, we are using an Open VPN setup. After several minutes of futzing with it, the only way to restore service is to reboot. After which, all is well, until the next morning.
I suspect that, after several hours of inactivity, the VPN connection is dropped. (not good IMO) But, I don't understand why it will not re-establish a connection when triggered by activity. Is there a kill-switch setting that I am not seeing?

I think I have discovered what is going on... But, I have no idea what to do about it.

This same issue happened again tonight. I accessed the router and found that, for some reason, it had attempted to activate TWO separate VPN client configurations at the same time...
Instead of rebooting, I turned both of them off... And then turned on the one that should have been activated... About two minutes later, everything works again.

I know I did not turn on both of them at the same time. So, can anyone fathom a guess as to why the router would do something like that?... And, how to stop it from happening?

Thanks for your assistance.

Thank you for your reply.
In fact, I have already done this. And, this morning, it was not connected to the internet again... VPN configs were offloaded. So, I guess it isn't the VPN clients after all.

I did set it to automatically reboot at 0530. So, it should have been a fresh connect. But, not so much.
I reloaded the initial settings, and continue to fight with it. It is irritating that the condition can only be repeated by waiting for it to happen, usually overnight.
