[Announcement] Removal of AiCloud from Asuswrt-Merlin

Yet another major security vulnerability being discovered in AiCloud, so I'm done with it. Next Asuswrt-Merlin releases will be removing AiCloud support.

Use a VPN, or switch back to stock (and deal with the constant security risks associated with it) if you need remote file access.

Thank god. Would be awesome to implement a different approach like nextcloud or so if the hardware can handle it.

Nextcloud is great and I use it on my Synology NAS. Not sure most routers could handle some of the requirements but it's a sweet solution. AiCloud is long past due in my opinion and Merlin is making a good decision here.

@RMerlin, if it's possible for you to answer, may I ask whether a "next release" would mean something like a new "dot" release (e.g. 3006.102.7) or could mean simply an "underscore" release (e.g. 3006.102.6_2)?

Thank you in advance.

Great news! Finally ;-)

Kudos to the Merlin team! Saying goodbye to AiCloud keeps our routers cleaner, safer, and more controllable. Thanks for keeping user security a top priority!

Whichever happens first. I won't push a release with just that one change.

Does anyone here actually use AICloud in their Marlin setup? I haven’t seen much discussion about it. I’m also in favour of removing it from the firmware to simplify things and for security reasons.

The definition of "Insanity" is doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting a different result.
Seems like it was just a few days ago that I was saying to @bennor and @ColinTaylor that maybe ASUS influenced your prior decision to keep it.

Very glad that this is being removed!

THANK YOU!

Thanks , never used it there are much better secure solutions out there . Good move removing it
