ASUS ExpertWiFi EBG15

What is this law you speak of, and how does it impact you, a non-Chinese customer? I mean, specifically, not just a vague "The CCP controls them" statement?

I am a pragmatic, I don't care about politics or religion.
I never said "The CCP controls them." I said "follows CCP laws" which would be for design, firmware, software, updates, patches, etc. Lots of businesses and home users don't want that. Personally I would use GL.iNet devices flashed with vanilla opewrt and replaced uboot. Tplink out of the box? No.

H.R.7589 - ROUTERS Act
05/14/2024

Good chance mainland chinese routers are likely going to get hit by massive tariffs and/or banned in America.

And induction charging can work just fine through plastic, it doesn't need to be made of glass.

True, but not "premium" enough. Heavy and fragile is better. 🧐

No much of a choice at the moment.

Not sure what single LAN port Access Point with AiProtection Pro is.
Not sure what business Access Point for Large home is either. Not Expert enough for this stuff... 🧐

All vlan aware and AiMesh compatible.

Firmware: Version 3.0.0.6

Setup

expertwifi.net or asusrouter.com or default 192.168.50.1

"Asus ExpertWifi" app via google play store or apple store can also config this via BT (didn't test this).

AiMesh
  • 100% working
VLAN aware AiMesh node required for VLAN over SSID

All AiMesh bands get put under one, single SSID. You can hide this SSID, but not disable it.

Five SSID's possible.

VLAN

A. Create VLAN without DHCP

1. Settings -> Lan -> Vlan -> Profile = create VLAN
2. "Self-defined network" -> select vlan -> advanced settings = choose the network here

B. Create VLAN with DHCP

1. "Self-defined network" -> Customized Network ->
  • WiFi Band = None
  • "SSID" = name for VLAN ID
  • Intranet - access or deny
  • Same subnet or not
2. "Self-defined network" -> select vlan -> advanced settings = choose the network here.
  • Change VLAN ID and network to what you want
Trend Micro

Declining is possible and has no affect on usage.

With Wired Router EBG15, Wired Switch EBP15, and Wired Access Point EBA63 as far as I can tell if you use the MESH functionality for network you cannot create VLANs. Wha? Put IoT on same subnet only? If you don't use MESH then you can create VLANs but no mobile roaming to best AP signal. Wha?

As far as I can tell

You can create VLANs and attach SSIDs in ExpertWiFi line of products in a very similar way 3006 firmware works in consumer GT/RT line of products. It's basically the same Asuswrt under the hood with different GUI skin, some additional touches and different marketing.

Isn't it CREATE SSIDs and ATTACH VLANs? I called support who told me there is a bug in the ExpertWiFi app that disallows VLAN creation and to use the WUI interface to the router to create the SSIDs and associated VLANs.

Must be Network (VLAN) first and attach to Radio (SSID) after. There is no point in creating blank SSID first not attached to any network. None of the SMB equipment works like this and Asus also changed the logic in 3006 firmware the way it should be.

Honestly, I wouldn't waste my time with this specific EBG15 + EBA63 experiment when tested working and more capable Ubiquiti UCG-Ultra + U6-Plus are readily available, don't use any 3rd party data sharing required software and even come cheaper.

Wow, Alpha Software at best. Set up the EBG15 Router, EBP15 Switch, and EBA63 Access Point as Mesh because planned to add at least another AP. This set up worked well. Next, created a VLAN for IoT per ASUS Doc. After applying the WiFi went down and did not come back. Removing VLAN restored WiFi for a bit but then the switch (and AP) disconnected. I know I could have set up as new again but I had it by that point. Oh, you also cannot supply a custom name to VLAN SSID! Imagine setting a sophisticated network then hosing by making a simple change. The telephone support was form Asia with language issue. After talking to support I was transferred to Tier 1 Networking Support and after waiting on hold for 20 minutes the call dropped.

Send everything back if it doesn’t work as advertised.

Multiple EBA63s in a mesh would probably be a recipe for disaster (I'd want a better prime node unless I could couple everything using Ethernet). ExpertWiFi does not seem designed for enthusiasts/prosumers, it's more for small businesses. Ubiquity does a lot right, but in their home targeted systems, they're still a little lacking IMHO.
Probably looking to move to a Banana Pi R4 Pro (without its own Wi-Fi module) and separate APs. *Not a perfect fit though!

They have to shut down AmpliFi consumer products website if you ask me. It's only there for variety. I've never seen any of the products live in use. Everyone with interests in new Ubiquiti system goes straight to UniFi. Many don't know AmpliFi exists.

I feel sorry for small biz that buys this! The idea for EBA63 in Mesh would be for wifi calling phone call moving around house (she lives in the sticks). There is an option to turn off Mesh. Given I only had one AP at the time MESH was NOT a factor except to possibly reveal crap software.

Not sure what exactly you are looking for @ds5686920. This ExpertWiFi is Expert in marketing only. Asuswrt with AiMesh and Trend Micro just like any other Asus router out there. Perhaps more buggy because even Asus doesn't know who is it for.
