Asus RT-AC68U firmware update failure

Greetings,
My Asus router is currently at 3.0.0.4.374_379-g9540d57 and the latest firmware file name is RT-AC68U_9.0.0.4_386_41994-g769f84f. I've tried both by letting it check for an install update and manually by giving it the file I've downloaded from ASUS web site. In both cases, it goes through the motion of applying the update but remains on the old version.

Why are you updating your RT-AC66U router (according to your title) w/ RT-AC68U firmware?!

If your router is actually an RT-AC68U rather than an RT-AC66U then you need to flash an intermediate firmware version before the final one:

Thank you. I went of that path and then upgraded to the latest Merlin firmware 386.1_2. I can stay with Merlin.
