I have been mirroring the official firmware of RT-AC86U since a long time ago. now many firmwares are no longer available on the official website. so If you have some special needs, I hope these old firmwares can help you.

DOWNLOAD LINK:

NOTE:
  • I have never implied or agreed to your use of these firmwares, because the old firmware contains many known security vulnerabilities and bugs, and you will bear all risks when using these firmwares.
  • All firmware comes from the asus website.
  • If you flash a firmware lower than the factory version, you may get a brick. You can find the factory version on the sticker of the router box.
  • The host may limit the traffic, please do not download files you don't need.
  • I will not make a promise to make the link permanently available.
  • Maybe there won't be any updates in the future.
  • The change log is only available in Chinese.
  • I don't have a mirror of the source code.
  • Asus owns all rights to these firmwares. If I receive their request, I may stop sharing without telling you.
  • You may need to use Asus Firmware Restoration Utility to flash the older firmware (Asus Guide), please make a backup of the configuration if you want to go back to the current version.
  • I suggest you do a factory default reset after downgrading, but DO NOT reload any configs. You should set it manually.
  • You bear all the consequences, and don't complain when you get a brick or get hacked or get any errors. If you are afraid or don't understand, please don't download it.

SUPPORT MODELS:
  • ASUS RT-AC86U
  • ASUS RT-AC2900 (Use the same firmware)
(GT-AC2900 is NOT support)

Here are 16 firmware releases on the Asus USA site dating back to July 2018:

Yes, you can find a lot of firmware on the official website, and you can also download the hidden firmware on the official website through link, like this:
https://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/wireless/RT-AC86U/FW_RT_AC86U_300438XXXXXXX.zip
For some firmware that has been permanently removed from the official server, you may only find it in my mirror.

From a security point of view, since some of the later releases addressed CVE or other vulnerability's it would be unwise to run older firmware.

I guess I don't understand why I would need old/insecure/expired firmware from an untrusted source.

Yes, don't trust me, because I don't even trust my cloud storage provider, just download it and check if the hash is same with the official one. I think this may ensure that it has not been tampered with. And I never recommend to use the old firmware, I have related warnings on it, I share it because sometimes it is helpful, for example, you need to fix a brick, Or just test the wireless driver.

I did not know about removed firmwares from asus website so that alone makes this thread worth for me. Also you can compare md5sha if you want to be sure as stated above.
