Backing up and restoring

I'd like to ask whether the following procedure would be likely to work for upgrading the firmware:-

  • Back up all the files/folders under jffs.
  • Unmount and remove the USB flash drive containing any scripts.
  • Flash the new firmware.
  • Restore factory defaults.
  • Reboot the router (from the GUI and/or the switch on the router).
  • Set up the basic configuration as per the startup wizard.
  • Enable jffs custom scripts and configs.
  • Enable format jffs at next reboot.
  • Enable SSH and change the default port (for better security).
  • Reboot the router.
  • Restore the jffs from the backup made earlier.
  • Re-insert the USB flash drive.
  • Reboot the router.
  • Continue setting up anything that hasn't been fully restored (VPN server?).

No. You will have a mixed configuration, some settings will the firmware defaults and others will be from the previous setup.

What are to trying to achieve? Preserve your old settings or not?

I was trying to fathom out if there was a way to avoid having to set up everything from scratch again, particularly any scripts, network devices names/assigned icons and any devices specified in the Wireless MAC Filter lists. From what you say, there doesn't appear to be any easy way around restoring settings after a clean flash upgrade.

Just do a normal firmware update. There's no need to do a factory reset.

The problem with restoring the whole of the jffs partition is that it also contains some nvram variables, VPN settings, certificates, AiProtection data, etc. So if the reason you're doing a factory reset is to start from a "clean slate" then you're negating that by restoring jffs.

OK, thanks for that. I'll bear that in mind for future reference.
