[Updated]

New version of my custom firmware build: 1.0.2.53SF-KF.

Changes (vs 1.0.2.53SF):

Fixing Attached Device Names. Idea of the fix and investigations made by kamoj (thanks to him). Implementation and optimization made by Voxel.

“KF” in the name of version means Kamoj Fix.

NOTE: Most probably no reset is needed to upgrade from my previous versions. But if you face problems it is better to perform reset.

Working great so far...

So I just got a new R7800 today and installed this firmware on it first thing. I'm new to Netgear stuff, been using ASUS and Merlin for quite some time.
Got everything hooked up and goin but the device list on the router shows "n/a" for every device name. I tried to manually change one and it doesn't change.
Using the Nighthawk app on my phone, the device names show up correctly.
Thanks for any insight you may have.

Eh, you know what? I'm going to just send this back to Amazon. The ASUS AC86U works much better. The 7800 couldn't handle my 1gig fiber connection too well. Thought I would give it a try at least.

Is all the latest security patches issued by the manufacturer in this FW, and remote management is disabled by defoult Voxel?

It is probably common bug for various NG routers with their latest firmware, not only R7800 specific:

Unfortunately integration assumes also integration of new bugs

Answered in P.M. There was full integration of 1.0.2.52 except OpenVPN client. So what is included into 1.0.2.52 is also include in my version. Including some bugs ;). I fixed part of them but not all.

Hello Voxel. Got a screaming deal on a new R7800 X4S so i picked it up. Been reading your threads for so time now and decided to give your latest firmware a try. Install was simple did a factory reset and reconfigured. So far working very well just wanted to say thanks for your work. You and Merlin are a huge asset to the third party firmware world. :)

How annoying. First time I've seen this...Attached Devices list has all my clients and their IP addresses listed, but no client names. Makes the Attached Devices list virtually useless. Too bad, since I just came back to using the R7800 after checking out some new firmware on the eero. The eero doesn't have this problem or any other problems, just some features missing that don't bother me much. Wonder when Netgear is going fix this. They must know about it, but are not listing it as a "known problem". I wonder if they think that they're fooling anyone.

One positive was being able to decline auto-update. Wish that they'd add that for the Orbi.

May go back to V1.0.2.50SF, where I don't recall seeing this annoying problem. I'd go back to dd-wrt, except I may be getting Gb. fiber soon, and I'm not sure that SFE is working fully there yet.

how is this firmware going as comparing with the stock one ?

has got some improvements ?

How is Smart Connect working for you all? I've got it enabled, no issues thus far—but all it seems to do is connect all AC capable devices to the 5G band, and all non AC capable devices to 2G band; which in my opinion, isn't so "intelligent" as Netgear claims it to be. Then again, even though that is the case, I have not encountered issues with it being enabled.

Since the WiFi driver was updated as well, I'd be interested in seeing some numbers versus the previous version.
