What is the best setting for 2.4 GHz 20/40 MHz or Automatic?
The same I ask for 5GHz 20/40 MHz
So 20/40 or 20 or 40 MHz?

If you live in a area were there is a lot of other access points around you then 20mhz is probably best for 2.4ghz. For the 5ghz band you want that set to 40mhz.

I use such a kind of setup in a friend's house, but with repeater mode.
Sacrificing the 5GHz band to the link and clients using the 2.4GHz only.
However, this *is* repeater mode which is not optimal.
A client bridge with fully operational AP on the second radio would be *the thing*

Setting up the link on one band and using the other band for clients is not Repeater mode anymore.

Well, the usage pattern is not repeater mode, but technically it is, isn't it?

Because AFAIU, when using the repeater mode both bands are linked over the bridge and all packets from 5GHz will be "forwarded" to the 2.4GHz band as well.
Also, all packets between clients on 2.4GHz will be forwarded down the 5GHz link to the main router.

This is different from using one radio as client(-bridge) and the other radio as AP on that bridge.

View of client connection type?

Hi John,

Just wondering....

I'm running the update 5 of the Fork and having recently added my first 802.11ac device (an iPhone 6 from work) to my wireless network, I was wondering if there's a way to see what the client connection status/type/speed is, on the router?

An example would be like:

Client <mac addr> - <ip address> - 802.11ac - 270 Mbps
Client <mac addr> - <ip address> - 802.11n - 144 Mbps
Client <mac addr> - <ip address> - 802.11g - 54 Mbps
...etc.

I noticed that under System Log/Wireless Log it does give a log of the client connections, but if something like the above could be added to the client status tab, I think it would be a great feature.

Also wanted to just give my appreciation to you and RMerlin for the great work you guys did with the firmware. I'm running it on my T-Mobile's AC1900 router that's been flashed with the 1.0.2.0 CFE (from AC68U) and update 5 of the Fork.

Guest network issues

I'm having an issue with an ac56u (AP mode) running the update 5 of the Fork. I do not have the check box to select "Access intranet off" on a 2.4GHz guest network. Also, the MAC firter stays on "yes" for the same guest network even after unchecking several times and depressing the apply button. I was running update 3 before (thanks by the way) with no MAC filter issues. Do you know if the ac56u is able to limit intranet on guest network like my ac68u (main router)? Should I have done a reset before jumping from update 3 to update 5?. Thank you.

Two issues you have raised....

(1) No "Access intranet off" setting when in AP mode
I checked the code, and it explicitly disables this option when running in AP mode. I'm not the best expert on the various router modes, so maybe someone can give some feedback on why this is done.

(2) Can't disable MAC filter on guest networks
Sigh....I've been following posts on the latest Merlin release on the fix that was picked up by Merlin (and me) to "enable MAC filtering on guest networks". After you posted that you were having a problem as well, I took a closer look at the code, and a side effect of the fix is that it forces the guest MAC filter mode to always be equal to the base wireless MAC filter mode. I'm working on a fix now.

Thanks for the quick reply, I am still very impressed with the level of support from these forums, which Asus could only dream to provide (or may be they do, I never even bothered as I loaded Merlin's firmware from day one and will surly be donating, thank you to Merlin as well).

The guest MAC filter being stuck to whatever is set on the 'main' wireless is there for every router model. Hang out a bit where you are for the next update if it's a critical function for you.

It's a technical limitation. As an AP, the device can only control devices connected to itself - it has no control over what's connected to the main router. Since it needs to be able to connect to at least one other device (the main router), it means it cannot block access to the rest of the network - your client need access to at least another device to get to the Internet.

That type of access control should therefore be implemented on the main router for it to work.

Does Anyone Know What May Be Causing Below Log Entries

Running 374.43_2-05j9527 on RT-N66U and have recentlystarted receiving the below log entries every 1/2 hour. At first i thought it may have been due running IPv6 (I have Comcast), I disabled IPv6, log entries continued. I then thought that maybe it was due to the 05 update, I reverted to the 04 update, the log entries continued. I am back running IPv6 on the 05 update and hoping someone within the forum may be able to help, know what is causing and/or how to go about correcting. Thank you.

Latest new client was a Amazon Kindle running Android but I thought that was added prior to the log entries started. I have a lot of clients 20+ at times, most of the time in teens. Could it be something with new Apple IOS 8, 8.1?

I run guest 2.4 GHZ network and have a 1TB HD acting as backup & DNLA server to TV's, XBOX, BluRay's. All seems to be working OK, except I cannot keep stream going to XBOX but that has been a issue for long time that I keep trying to solve.

I will check that client by turning its WIFI off to see if ti may be the cause. Is that what I need to be doing checking each client one by one?

I'm far from an expert on this, but my first impression was that something was querying the router (radvd = Router Advertisement Daemon for ipv6) for configuration information. Hence my question about new clients in case it was something easy like 'I just added xxxx'.

I know it's a pain to start checking each client, so you may want to see if anybody else chimes in before going down that route.

I wanted to get back my old 2.4 ghz signal range. So i tried this out
Why my ralink card on pc can't connect to 5 ghz? It always worked with em builds. I wonder if someone else has this issue.
With my phones, 5 ghz work fine.

After I installed 374.43 Merlin firmware in my RT-N66U router I'm not able to use SFTP to connect to external servers. I have to use SFTP to connect to an external Unix server to access files there. But if I bypass the router then I'm able to connect using SFTP. I use this router just purely for connecting to the Internet and not for anything else such as connecting to my LAN from outside etc. I'm not tech-savvy when it comes to routers. I did serach the internet a lot and played with the settings a lot but this SFTP thing still doesn't work. Please help.
