ok guys i am looking at adding an 8 port smart switch to my network as i have run out of ports and am mixing 100 and gig devices.
question is which one to go for ?????
i have looked at both the netgear and the linksys devices reviewed on this site and i like the look of the linksys unit, however i keep seeing reviews online saying the device burns out after 6 months :(
anyone offer some thoughts

Do you really need smart switch ? If you need simple unmanaged switch I can recommand those:

I have D-Link DGS-1008D 8-Port for 1 year and a D-Link DGS-1005D 5-Port for 3 years and both still going strong. I don't remember having to reset them.

An unmanaged switch will auto negotiate the port speed.

A smartswitch is useful:

1) when you want to create port based VLAN's see here for more on this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vlan

2) if you want to limit bandwidth to certain ports

3) want to monitor the ports for usage

4) want to mirror a port for troubleshooting

5) want to address flow control issues on your network. See here: http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/content/view/30212/55/

For most residential applications an unmanaged switch is fine. Think if you need any of the above features.

Tim also wrote a great series of articles on what smartswitches do. See here: http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/content/view/30840/229/

My recommendations:
Unmanaged - Netgear GS108
Smart - GS108T

cheers fella i went for the netgear GS108T smartswitch, if anything using a smart switch will increase my understanding on how best to manage my network.
i do work in IT so the more knowledge the better :D
