Are current NASes running on hardware or software RAID 5?
I understand that hardware RAID is more reliable in terms of data recovery in the event of disk failure however, its more expensive.

They run software RAID.

The primary advantage of hardware RAID is speed. There is no advantage that I know of in data recovery reliability.
