Intermittent connectivity issues with RT-AC86U

I have an ASUS RT-AC86U.

It's about 6 months old running Merlin 384.7.2

And .. it's got problems.

I'm running through a VPN, but I don't think that's the issue.
Primarily the issue is that:
* no external connectivity (just for a minute or two)
* on occasion the router itself can't be accessed
* the router pages are unresponsive sometimes (seems this one is a known bug?)

It's intermittent, but recently in most simple web surfing sessions of 15 minutes or more there's an interruption. Whether simply accessing it or changing which of the 2 wifi networks I access it through, or resetting it. It reverts to working.

The temps seem OK based on what I've read (sitting at low 50s for wifi and 70 for cpu)

Hardware issue?

  • Though you didn’t say, can I assume that this issue has been with you for the entire time? If not, what changed around the time you first noticed.
  • You should be using a DNS other than your provider’s. I use Google.
  • What is the physical connection to your ISP?
  • To completely rule out out your VPN consider not using temporarily.
  • Does the issue occur when you use other devices?

Thanks - and I see another with similar issues. I believe it's the VPN, the logs show an auth failure which reconnects after a couple of minutes. So I've contacted them. I had mistakenly presumed the action I took was making a difference. (changing wifi, logging into the router) But it turns out that was just the delay needed for it to reconnect. I should have checked that immediately. It's a relief - I'm tired of router issues and this one had been great to-date.
