is the LTS (Long Term Service) fork of Asuswrt-Merlin based on 374.43_2 written by @john9527 still being maintained? I ask because I have not seen new firmware since last year?

Unclear. There have been long gaps in releases before. Just no way to be sure. IMO

Right, but the latest "Public Release" is almost a year old now, as the below link shows.
