I have been searching the web for Raspberry Pi 3 projects. I came across this interesting project that allows one to install code on the PI to use is as an IDS. The coder has a wiki with instructions. It appears that it will work with ASUS-Merlin Firmware AFAIK.

Fun project - while a Pi can do this, there are compute and bandwidth concerns with the Pi - might also consider similar on a NUC running debian jessie, which is very similar to raspbian if one needs more bandwidth.
