Was curious what everyone’s current thoughts are on this router’s overall performance.../...
Still worth keeping it? Would you recommend it to others?
I upgraded my 4 year old RT-AC68U with the GT and I'm happy. I was having some issues with the RT mainly with Dual WAN and it needed to be restarted twice a week to keep it stable (otherwise you could not use the web interface, some clients were disconnected etc.. so I suppose that the router was having a memory leak somewhere)

With the GT Dual WAN is working way better (that is I always have a connection to the Internet no matter what, with the RT sometimes no internet at all when the two wan connections was not down ! and it required restarting the router). I was also having issues with some devices not reconneting to the router at some point needing either restarting the device and / or the router. With the GT I do not have theses issues (I still restart the router once a week at night for safety)

I'm not using VPN or the dedicated gaming features, but I'm using AI Protection, Dual Wan and QOS, traffic analyzer. There are some bugs though, so far I noticed :

* With Dual WAN, when the router is using my USB 4G Modem (which is my primary connection) the bandwith usage isn't reported correctly (or at all), it's fine though when the router is using the DSL connection on the WAN port.

* QOS : If i set device priority for QOS, it seems to work, though at some point the priorities are reset to default for all devices...

* IFTTT doesn't work at all : it is connectect, I can see the ASUS router in my IFTTT account but if I try to use the "device connect" trigger, the devices list doesn't load at all (maybe it's because of Dual WAN and also because I'm using double NAT (not by choice))

So all in all I'm happy, the Wifi is most reliable than it was with the RT (and it was very good). Do I recommend it ? Well... It is an expensive router, so maybe not until price has dropped and until then the previous models are still solid (but then again I'm not using the gaming features at all)

Thank you to both!

I need some help....

I have an integrated modem router (Virgin media Superhub 3) that can't get decent wifi through a concrete floor into the basement lounge. I also want to set up a VPN Server that I can use when travelling. So I decided to go with the ASUS GT-AX11000 as it was more powerful and had the option to upgrade to a mesh if needed.

Std approach is to switch the modem router into modem only then use the ASUS as a wireless router. This works but the VM Superhub has for ethernet ports that I use for a printer and NAS storage and in modem mode only one is working and that's needed for the ASUS connection. If I set the ASUS as an access point then it all works, with the Superhub providing DHCP and all the ethernet ports work fine, but the VPN settings are not available (only when it is a wireless router).

How do I connect the ASUS as a wireless router to the Superhub also acting as a router? D-Link provide an example (link) but I can't make it work as the ASUS seems to need the connection coming into the WAN port.

Well you cannot go around this, if you want to use the ethernet ports on the modem. For the asus router to work as a router you have to connect something to the wan port. This implies that the wan network and the lan network are two differents network.

So if you leave the modem in router mode, you can very well connect the asus router to it as well as the printer and the nas, the asus router will be connected on its wan port and be in router mode. The nas and printer will be on the "wan" network and all the other devices will be on the "lan" network and unless you set up routes on both network, they will not be able to talke to each other.

The most simple solution would be to use a dedicated switch connected to the asus router (i suppose the router and modem will be in two different locations, so you'll have to use two ethernet cable one to go from the modem to the asus router on the wan port and another one to go from the switch to a lan port on the asus router)

Has a factory reset and setup from scratch been performed on the GT router?

If this doesn't solve anything, make contact with ASUS support soon.
Yes I have. I contacted ASUS and they’re looking into my issue. Sent them a bunch of information this week so now I’m playing the waiting game. Thanks for the reply.

@RMerlin Any idea why ASUS doesn't enable MU-MIMO by default on this router? I thought that is one of the stand out features of these latest routers but I just accidentally noticed that it's disabled by default so I turned it on.

Does anyone think/know if Asus is going to allow us to have the 2nd 5GHz band back when in mesh mode if the mesh mode is attached via Ethernet as the backbone between the two nodes? I am currently using a AC5300 as my node paired with my AX11000 and will be wiring my house this weekend to use ethernet instead of the 2nd 5GHz band as the backbone and would love to be able to use all three bands on each router again haha.

Sent this email to Merlin earlier last week but thought I would also get others opinion on this:

I have Rogers Gigabyte router at home. I originally had the Asus GT-AC5300 router and I began to notice that the internet speed was dropping (please note: all talk is about wired connection and not wireless going forward).

For example:
In the morning I would test my modem speed (using speedtest.net) and I would get 920 down and around 30 up (this is good) all of a sudden my speed would drop later in the day to 250 down and around 25 up. This would stay for a while however the next day I would get my speed back to acceptable levels. I would be fine for a few days and again the same issue. This happens randomly (no real pattern).

I also noticed that my router would reboot on its own. During the period where performance was poor I would hookup my pc directly to the Rogers router and my performance was normal (speed was at 890/920 down and 27/30 up). So I assumed it was my router. I rebooted the router a number of times and also restored back to factory specs. I verified that I had the latest firmware on the router. Nothing helped since it continued to happen. I also called Rogers ( I have had them out to my home about 6 times this year for this issue) and they have come to my home and found nothing wrong with any of my equipment. In fact they found that line noise was the issue and they stated that they would fix it.

So since this has continued I purchased a new Router the Asus GT-AX11000 router and have hooked it up in the morning. Performed my speed test and everything was working great (920 down and 30 up). I also decided to use my older modem as a AImesh setup and hooked it up stairs to get full coverage. Again did my test and internet speeds were fine. By 2:00 pm my internet speed was again down to 240 down and 27 up. The speedtest.net shows that at the beginning of the test the speed was higher but not great at 520 down and 27 up however you can see a steady decrease in the download speed until the end of the test it was at 240 down however the upload speed stayed constant.

I have restarted the router and this morning I performed a speed test and got 600 down and 30 up (this was at 6:30 in the morning).

Additional Information:
1.
Both routers are at the latest version of firmware (AC5300 and AX11000)
2. Asus Router is connected to Cisco Smart switch
3. Using Link Aggregation from the Router to the Cisco switch (Dedicated ports on the AC5300 and using ports 1 & 2 on the AX11000) Cisco switch has link aggregation built in (set to load balance)
4. Have port forwarding enabled and set to my PC’s IP address
5. I have a home made server (Running Windows Server 2012) that is my DNS and DHCP Server (therefor DHCP not being used on the router and DNS points to the server)
6. Setup Wireless as default settings (other then putting in password and name) *Note: have tried various port address to get best performance.

Hope anyone can help.

Thanks

Very strange. We can start with a few things.

1. Remove the Asus GT-AC5300. You are making your network more complicated and it is a router you did have issues with. You can put it back later.
2. Replace your cable modem. I have seen certain cable modems do weird things. For example mine would not let me get to certain sites, then reboot it and it was fine. My feeling is this is your issue.
3. You can replace the Cisco switch with a cheap netgear to see if that is your issue.
4. Use the Asus built in dhcp. (this is most likely not the issue). Just turn your server off if possible.
5. Make sure you do a Factory reset on the Asus router after every firmware update. It sucks, but its a known issue.

My question for you. At night when you are having the issue when you reboot, your speeds go back up to 920 down? The reason I ask is the last house I was at was Charter and they would slow down at night because their pipe was full. So speeds would drop 50%.

You really need to isolate the issue, one network equipment at a time. Make your network simple then slowly add things back.

Hello all,
I just bought this router to try to provide better wifi speeds than my RT-AC5300 was providing (I'm in a neighborhood with a bit of interference but nothing major). I've done a wifi scan and saw absolutely no one using DFS channels.

So far one of the things I've seen is that with the latest firmware (no idea if this existed prior to this firmware version):
A: The DFS channels don't seem to produce much benefit from the standard channels (perhaps the interference on the normal channels isn't that great to make much of a difference).
B: I had absolutely horrible rubberbanding (for lack of a better term that I was seeing during speed tests, pings etc.. Latency all over the place). Speed tests would be extremely choppy for the first several seconds and then it would snap out of it and start to receive/send data - it happened in both the upload and download phase.
C: Based on the behavior I thought that maybe it was happening during the channel steering/beamforming of the router and I was right. As soon as I turned off anything related to beamforming (I also turned off MU-MIMO but haven't bothered to test whether that is part of the problem at thsi point).

So, at this point I'm seeing no benefit to wifi speed (probably a little less speed to be honest) with the exception of my gigabit Internet connection over wired connection has better speeds than did the RT-AC5300.

Anyone have a magical configuration/settings changes that I can try?

Yes I have done all of the steps listed above.
1. Removed the GR-AC5300 from the network. Still having same issue
2. Went to rogers and replaced the Cable Modem with another model
3. Setup another small network using a dlink 24port gigabyte router (unmanaged) and using the router to do the DNS and DHCP work. Hooked up two PC's (to eliminate possible MB gig port as issue). Also reset AX1100 router to factor specs. - Same issue
4: Rebooted router at night. Speed setting stayed that same.

After all this I contacted Rogers and due to my ongoing issue was able to get a VP to look into this issue. There answer is to create a secondary segment in my area (apparently there are a lot of individuals in my area on the Rogers network). That they said should eliminate my issue (we will see). However it can take months for them to do it. Apparently there are costs which need to be approved to create a secondary segment in our area.

I looks like I will have to wait and see.

By the way my tests of performance was done under 3 different times (6:00 am, 6:00pm and 12:15am) All tests were showing poor speeds however the 6:00pm time was the worst.
6:00 am - 650 down and 20up
6:00 pm - 450 down and 16up
12:15 am - 637 down and 19up

So at least its not your equipment. Internet providers will over sale an area and during peak times it shows. Just like I said about Charter. Too many people sharing 1 fiber line. I hope they fix it because Charter did not.

Did you factory reset after doing the firmware update? It sucks but after every firmware update you need to slick it and start over. Plus you cant use a backup to restore.

Please tell this Val D. - he allway thinks newer chips are (because they must be) much better and will never believe that there is no difference in real life and sometimes even opposite!

He is not telling anything about clients, distances, link rates, current WiFi settings... I don't do guessing games. You are the specialist in guessing. This thread is about experiences with a very specific hardware. I'm sure you've seen GT-AX11000 router only on picture, so please don't spam this thread. More than 2000 spam posts in other threads are more than enough. Thank you!

He rides a mythical dragon and doesn't own any ASUS routers ............;)

Yeah, I did a factory reset + initialize settings (I'm used to doing this on my RT-AC5300 at each update.). No, I never do export/imports.

The distance where I was testing was about 35 to 40 feet. The router is slightly higher (about 8 feet higher - I have it up near the ceiling in a utility room that isn't near metal ducting) than the iMac that I was testing on.

I'd tried every stinking channel/width there was and they were all doing it - it didn't stop until I turned off beamforming settings. At any rate - I've found a work around until hopefully it is something fixed in the future. I just turned my RT-AC5300 into an AP, turned off the 2.4 and 5-1 radios and configured the 5-2 radio. I'm getting about 720Mbps down now which is good enough.
