First off, I am not normally a forum poster. I however felt obliged to create an account to say THANK YOU to the many on this forum who have helped me with issues over the past year. Merlin,

from one retired sw engineer (35+ yrs) to another, welcome to this board. the folks here are superb! for the longest time i was a linksys customer. even more so when cisco bought them but the marvel chipset never got the support it deserved. i had a familiarity with asus-tek that few here may have. as a chinese company they infringed heavily on usa ip. i'll leave it there.

that said, the ac86u is a phenomenal device especially when compared to linksys. i only use it for home with nas and no aimesh or the other apps, so i hear u. still, the support from this board stomps the dd-wrt forum - and they were pretty good as well.

. . . best

I know this sounds way too easy, but I believe 5717 as the backbone to any firmware update was essential in my testing. You will still get the WLC Events, but if you are not using Merlin, then just ssh into router and set the nvram logging to 5. Even Roaming Assistant is rock solid.
How can I ssh into router? and set the nvram to 5?

Under Administration/System you will need to enable SSH. Then use Putty(one of the easier ssh programs) to connect to your router. At the prompt type the following:
nvram set log_level=5
nvram commit
reboot

If you are using Merlin, then there will be drop down boxes under the System Log tab to control the verbosity of the logs.

Ive never done a reset on any Asus router Ive used.

If you know what your doing around a mainboard - if you google you can upgrade the memory.

Curious who you're replying to?

Running merlin firmware which has been rock solid...hows the wifi performance in ac86u? Any drops on 2.4 or 5ghz?
Running solid with no device drops for 7 days with latest Asus Firmware. I have AI protection, Smart Connect, and Qos running. Also, not experiencing ANY channel ping pong. Overall Wifi experience is smoking!

With my 86u, smart connect would change channels every 20 min. I replaced it last week with a ax-58u. The channels have only changed once in 5 days.

Yes, auto channel. Unfortunately, Asus firmware does not allow channel selection when Smart Connect is enabled.

That is not correct. With the newest Asus Firmware 3.0.0.4.384_81792
you can now set the channels for both 2.4 and 5GHz with Smart Connect enabled, see at the bootom of the menu...

I think you missed my post that was moved to another thread. At the time of that post, it was correct.

Yes, you were correct then and you were correct today regarding 81792. Thanks for revealing that new feature today... Smart Connect, now with fixed channels, is working great here.

I am also using Smart Connect now with manual channels for 2.4 and 5GHz bands, cool!

It took Asus quite a time, but finally.. Netgear supported Smart Connect with user selected/fixed channels for a while on their Broadcom WiFi routers.
