support for unsupported printers :-)

New Around Here
Hi,
just got my asus rt-ac68u and put merlin 380.58 on it. so far, all is well.

the problem I have is with a very old printer (minolta pagepro 1250w).

the printer is _not_ supported by and windows machine newer than XP :-(

in the past I managed to install it on an FC machine using a custom ppd file and foomatic as the filter and then sharing it through cups. using this set up, I can print from win7 64 bit without any issues.

I am trying to move the printer to the router such that I can retire my linux box (until I get a newer one). I managed to get cups up and running and the ppd file seems to be working, however, I can't figure out a way to get foomatic on the router.

help would be much appriciated.

thanks,
Joe

p.s. - I am not married to the cups method so if anyone has any other idea on how to share a minolta pagepro 1250W hooked up to the usb port of the router and have it be accessisble from a win 7 machine, I am all ears.

The printer doesn't happen to have an Ethernet port by any chance does it?

nope :-(
it is a very old (and good) printer. it has one USB port and one parallel port.
the way I got it to work in the past is by using usb into a linux (FC) box and running cups on the linux box. the missing piece on the router is foomatic:
http://www.linuxfoundation.org/collaborate/workgroups/openprinting/database/foomatic
if that can be installed on the router, people will be able to reuse older printers and share them across their networks.

thanks
