the rt1900ac is just not fast enough or grunty enough to handle 1.1 , it was ok before but now it struggles many have said so and it should be fine on the new model but not on the rt1900ac

Speed is one thing... but... I somehow feel like I'm having some security issues.

Yeah... it was the IPS/IDS system being active that was acting up with the rest. While Intrusion Prevention is a welcome addition, it's just not made for a router with this kind of processor. I mean... 80% memory usage and over 60% CPU usage. That's just normal usage without any special services running in the background. Turned off, CPU is back at 13% and memory is at 24%.

Edit:Smart Connect works really good though.

I've been a bit puzzled with this product - Synology (and the other NAS vendors) are so very close to being able to deploy SDN/OpenFlow on the home network - would have been perhaps a better decision to leverage into a ODM WiFI AP and use DSM as the orchestrator and control plane...

With SDN on the development side - it's actually cheaper and more reliable - less "smarts" in the switches/routers/AP's, so it reduces their cost and improves reliability and security.

And SDN is no harder than what we already see with the all in ones - and is much better when we start looking at multiple small AP's inside the home - there SDN would actually be a plus...

Looks pretty resource intensive. Are they using a full-featured suite such as Snort, rather than a solution more optimized for embedded usage (such as Trend Micro's DPI engine)?

Google's DNS filtering is embedded if one wanted to use that. Also, their own version of Snort is included, IDS(Instrusion Detection System/IPS(Intrusion Prevention System). All can be turned on or off whenever. Very very resource intensive. It's just not properly implemented for this router. It's ment for the upcoming RT2600AC(with an almost twice as fast processor and memory capacity).
