Wifi issue

So after some channel sorting I'm now useing 2.5ghz 40mhz ch6 below, and noise from that was lowest in wifi logs, then 5ghz am using 160mhz ch52.
But still not all devices are switching to 5ghz. So looked at this guide,

am on default setting on the router, was thinking of increaseing the swap range, but a bit lost, this is what I have.

Was thinking of using some info from the above link. Yet after some advice on it.

Are you still troubleshooting the weak signal upstairs issue?

Instead of using/tweaking Smart Connect (rarely discussed here), which I've never had to do for my clients, you could disable SC, set different SSIDs per band, and only connect your clients to the 5.0 SSID for manual band steering and segmenting of clients... avoids band contention and simplifies roaming.

PS Now that you are on page 2, you should probably fix the spelling of 'issue' in your subject line. :)

Nope, not too busy today. Just decided to not comment ... Aw shucks ... why not?

I usually recommend the default WIFI settings including SmartConnect. However, there are some settings some of your clients may not like such as DFS channels and some clients do not like 5 GHz at all. WPA3-Personal can also be a problem for some.

So just go ahead and mess up your WIFI settings. You can always do a factory reset to go back to square one...

WPA3-Personal can also be a problem for some.

Linksys Wireless-N PCI Adapter, WMP600N, v1.0 on Win7 Pro will connect to node guest1 WLAN but have no Internet access. I fixed this by using WPA2-Personal on my guest1 WLANs, which is probably better overall for guest/IoT support.

Thanks, well for me using the default asus setup wizard, it enables smart connect. Will think on setting them single also use a guest network for like my smart meter. If messing with smart connect fails. I will tweak some setting and report back.

Thanks for pointing out the spelling mistake.

Also one of the devices I'm haveing issues with is a Xbox X, have read it's a knowen issues that they have 5g problems.

I've Sorted the Xbox X by added it to the wireless MAC Filtering, 2.5ghz and blocked.
So the only device I am having problems with now is a Samsung S8 mobile.
So I changed the -62 in the switch control to -70, no change, so changed it to -58 no change. When downstairs it will swap, yet when upstairs like back cornor of room, it says siginal is great 2.5ghz -68. So now not sure why it's not switching upstairs?

Have it set on -68, as it's the highest I've seen in the siginal searching.

Notice in the wifi logs that my Sky Q mini box has a 2.5ghz of -38, the mobile is under a meter away yet -68, I checked the mobile for power saving etc all off, is it normal for there to be that bit of a jump?

Could a Philip's hue bulb cause issues?
I got the siginal switch to swap, it seems my mobile in the same spot can go from -62 to -72

Normal is for the client connection to degrade at distance, going from excellent and max link rate to not excellent and not max link rate.

Maybe the sky q boxs are interfering. Have read something about this, but thinked was down to sky q box have a hotspot, yet have it disabled

Don't understimate radio... turn OFF the interference including WiFi Direct APs/hotspots you don't use; don't co-locate transmitters including cordless devices like mice, headphones, etc.; and stand back!

I have 3-4 devices in that room, sky q mini that is receiving 2.5ghz from my router and 5ghz from the other sky box, I then have a amazon echo 5ghz, the hue bulb(controlled from down stairs via the hue hub, cable to my router 3meter), then the mobile.

On the mobile I forced stopped the wifi direct, could not see a disable.

Think it's just the mobile, is old. As downstairs next to my router my signal is -56 to -60 will have to investigate a bit more when I get more time

I was forgetting that the mobile signal downstairs is 5ghz not 2.5ghz.

Smart Connect default setting is Disabled.
Not exactly true...

If you choose separate SSID's in the initial setup, Dual Band SmartConnect is off

If you follow the "default" setup, do not choose separate SSID's, Dual Band SmartConnect is on.

So, my statement about "default" settings is true. :)

Am all sorted now, by changing the smart connect 2.5ghz setting from -62 to -68 has worked, left the 5ghz -82 drop off to how it was so if 5ghz is too weak like in the garden.

After a bit of advice on guest mode now. What devices do you recommend putting is guest mode, like my amazon echo's, washing machine, smart meter etc and my xboxs, pcs, playstation and mobiles on the normal net?

Off the top of my head...

All untrustworthy clients that do not require intranet access, starting with the cheap, presumed insecure, IoT clients that talk through the cloud.

Big data clients with apps will likely protest (Amazon, Google). If Amazon is still pushing their sidewalk feature... free Internet for neighbors walking by... turn that OFF.

Appliances? I would not bother to connect them.

Visitor clients, absolutely.

Reputable gaming clients... probably not... I'm not familiar with these.

PCs and phones, no. Poorly managed/kid PCs and phones, if you can but they'll need their own printer. PCs in a physically unsecured area, yes.

Streaming media clients, no. These should be wired, if possible... just prevents a lot of nuisance.

Keep an eye on AiProtection... if a client is generating a lot of protected events, you might want to get that client off your intranet and train the user in safe computing.
