New Around Here
Looking for some recommendations on a fairly simple NAS.

4 disk or 5 disk

I want to use 2TB WD Green disks or other green disks

Ability to use as a Mac Time Machine backup for two macbooks would be great

Going to run RAID5

Storing movies and tv episodes to stream to my popcorn hour players

Storing my photographs and other important documents (also backing those up to CD/DVD for offsite backup occasionally)

The models I was looking at were:

Netgear ReadyNAS NV+ RND4000-100NAS $449
Netgear ReadyNas NVX Pioneer Edition RND400E $689
QNAP TS-509PRO $918
QNAP TS-439PRO II $825

Anything else I should be looking at? What's the best bang for the buck in this range?

You can try the NAS Chart Price vs. Performance view. Just take into account the cost of the drives for diskless units.

If you're not looking for the highest performance and if you don't mind diskful products, you might look at the Buffalo TeraStation III and ES.

As Tim said, take disk cost into account. Also be sure to use disks on the manufacturers compatibility list. Some of the "Green" disks are problematic in RAID configurations.

If you don't need such processor speed, perhaps you want to consider the Synology DS 410 (which is what I am considering).
